My Firestorm

After 3 years of not doing much with the bike, I finally got it together and completed it this year...for now

Modifications:

VFR 800 rear end
954 Front end
Z1000 exhaust
R6 licence plate mount
Modified sharkskins
Shorty levers (Knock off but works great)
Bar end mirrors (not very useful - unless I flip it upwards but it looks tres cool)
LED signals - rears are embedded into the seats
LED stop lights embedded into rear reflector
MDA 8 cells battery

I would like to change the exhaust and have it underneath the bike with it looking like a custom lower...but that will be done another time. For now, it's time to ride..

Here are some of the process pictures:

The Process of the SSS conversion can be found here: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...sided+swingarm

Thanks for the comments....good or bad..:-)

Looks great! Love the look of single sided swingarms. How does it handle with the 954 front/vfr rear suspension?

Really hard for me to judge because of the complete suspension rework on the bike with the 954 front end mod at the same time. I haven't flog it yet (look at the chicken strips) as the tires on the thing is at least 3 years old. I don't want to take a chance on them. I will get a new set next year and report back. But so far and with recollection from memory, it is a stiffer ride and it doesn't wheelie as much. It just takes off given the extended SSS. BTW a 108 link chain was used.

I have raised the rear end up by one inch with an aluminum shim to compensate for the drop with the SSS conversion. Transition is quick but I think it is a little lazy. I think part of the problem is the stock Z1000 exhaust mounted so high. That thing is heavy.

Once I get new tires, I will try to dial in the suspension and see whats up. Overall it is not where I'd like it to be yet as I am not truly comfortable with it yet (this is my first bike with motorcross bar - feels a little unusual)

Awesome

I noticed the 108 link chain, but what size are the sprockets?

Moving the gauges, did you just make a new bracket for it?

How was the battery conversion (and how much weight did it save)?

How was clearance between the left side of the dual exhaust and the SSS?

There will definitely be more questions coming.

530 15/43

Yes..It is mounted on the round part of the fatbar...I'll post a picture later

Straight forward. The thing is approximately 3x4 inches and weight around 1 lb. Huge savings in terms of size and weight. It cost me $145 shipped

By 'dual exhaust' if you mean the stockers, then I didn't even attempt.

There will definitely be more questions coming.

Very cool!
I have also been inspired by several projects, to swap my original swinger for a single sided one.
In yr parts list I see that you used a VFR 800 also.
Do you have any details pictures of the fitting of the sss?
Is it hard, what things should i keep in mind?

And Calitoz, what did you do about relocating the ICM, and the converter unit?

ICM?....I am assuming you are referring to the electronics?..They are under seat location and this was made much easier by the small MDA battery. The R/R is mounted underneath the metal pan in which the seat sits on. The R/R was mounted this way to get some air circulation. The problem I might be having is that the exhaust heat radiates close by. It has not effect it yet but I anticipate problems.

That's what I was thinking, but I was pondering how to make it fit; forgot about the smaller battery.

I was going to have a cover fab'd for my R/R and leave it out in the air for as much airflow as possible, and relocate everything else under the seat.

Was the MDA battery one of these powertool battery conversions threads I've ran across?

Well... Looking at one of the pictures up there ^^ It says MDA123 on it, which means I believe they are at the very least trying to make believe they are using A123 cells... If they are infact those type of cells, it's either re-worked DeWalt cells or bought from A123... Could be either way... dunno since I can't find an official website, and both are stated in various forums...

I got the information here

According to Jim who is the guy building these, they are Dewalt units. Here is his contact information.

I highly recommend them and as you are aware, you can build it yourself and save some $$. But I choose this route because the $ saved was not really worth the hassle after factoring the necessary tools and battery purchase

Really good look, Lou! I knew that a broken bike and broken wrist would not keep you down. I can imagine it is a tuning nightmare but the build is top quality. Congrats on bringing her back.

Tweety,
Where did you order yourA123 cells, and about what was the cost per. cell?
I "GOOGLED" - How to build battery pack using A123.. Is this site a good instruction?
Thank you

Thanks Doug

Actually this is the other one not my (formerly) silver one....So far so good. It appears that I do have an R/R issue but other than that, it has worked out very well. I am very happy overall with the build. There is more to do but I am saving that for the winter.
