WHAT is the Sales Pitch/ and from WHO?
Could It Be TRUE?
Kind of hard to trust. I still have a 65' Mustang (fastback) with 300k-with org. engine-Castrol 10/30w oil.

I STILL remember learning from my father how to carefully remove a dipstick to check the oil level in our cars. It was drilled into me — along with turning off the lights when you left a room
— that oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles
Childhood habits are hard to undo, and that’s often good. To this day, I hate seeing an empty room with the lights on.
when the 3,000 miles was a good guideline,” said Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor for the car site Edmunds.com. “But it’s no longer true.
Oil chemistry and engine technology have improved to the point that most cars can go several thousand more miles before changing the oil, Mr. Reed said. A better average, he said, would be 7,500 between oil changes, and sometimes up to 10,000 miles or more.....

i was talking to a riding friend who is a certified mechanic... i said i thought that the 3000 mile oil change was a thing of the past and that in my honda cr-v manual it states that 7500 miles is the recommended change interval ( my older accord was the same ).
his comment was he probably sees more issues today than in the past that are oil related. he said that the oil ports are getting smaller so smaller particals can cause problems. he named off a couple of cars thats he's seen more problems with but i don't remember as they were not cars i own.
bottom line... he changes is oil at or before 3000. i was going about 5k miles but am now back to 3000. i do tend to keep my autos until they start to fall apart.

quote=mikstr;281011]car engines do not have the oil being shared (and sheared by) the transmission, an important difference....[/quote]
Would agree with that statement. I point of , this was that the consumer report is actually feeding this B.S. to consumers- nieve enough to believe. Probably the same consumers that believe "You shouldn't change the transmission fuild until the vehicle has 100k on the clock..

well nothing against the mechanic safe is good but for sake of debate I ask this.
Who probably knows best, the car maker (Honda, Toyota etc.) or the oil companies...
or who probably has more to gain by lying about how often to change your oil?

I haven't heard of engines seizing or getting wrecked from oil changes occurring too often. The number one problem with the longer changes is that most consumers dont check their oil, and with the oil consumption that most cars have that means that they run out of oil before they ever reach their 15,000 mile change interval. I will continue to spend my $18 at reckless abandon every 3000 miles.
Try this....check your gas mileage for 2 tanks with 7500 miles on the odometerbetween oil changes. Then 2 tanks on fresh oil.
As you are doing this I'll be doing my oil changes at 3000 miles.....
