SH Newbie Problems
It's me, the noob. Just picked up the Hawk today. Battery was week after sitting. Rode it for a while then got off for a few minutes to chat with my GF's folks. Let it idle, afraid it wouldn't fire if I turned it off. Two things happened.
#1 Bike overheated. Coolant out the overflow onto the ground.
#2 Cooling fan did not turn on.
Questions: (because I could not download the manual) How do I know when I've added enough coolant to replace what was lost?
Is there a light that would come on if the coolant level was too low to safely ride?
The yellowish "S" light is for the sidestand, right?
I only have about twenty minutes of ride time on her so far. I know that I should not have left it idling.
I think I can deal with the fan issue fairly simply.
Thanks

#1 Are you sure it overheated or was the coolant tank too full?
#2 Bust out the multimeter
Yellow S light is the sidestand.
There are two lines on the coolant reserve tank, UPPER and LOWER. Fill until the coolant is in between them.

Awesome, thanks for the diagram. I really don't think the pump or thermostat is broken. I just had it sitting there for too long at idle, no wind, hot humid day. The sensor very well might be broken, in which case I'm just gonna throw a toggle in the loop.
Is there any way someone could e-mail me the manual. I just can't seem to download it. I think it might be the security settings on my work computer.
My e-mail is ..................removed.
It might even get me to stop asking stupid questions.
Thanks folks,

At 140MB, it is too big to email.
You should be able to browse it through this site, it'll take a while to load though.

I'm new to the superhawk too. A few hundred miles since I bought it. Today I replaced the radiator fluid as I wasn't liking how warm it was getting during the day and its only getting warmer here in L.A. The old stuff was dirty! Definitely needed replacing, was probably the original coolant in the thing.
I've used the Honda premixed anti-freeze in pretty much all my bikes, not that expensive and ready to dump into the cooling system. May be worth it to flush your system with some new anti-freeze as you never know how long its been when you buy used.

My fluid was new last summer. Bike wasn't used much for the past two years. I know the guy I bought it from really well. Everything is pretty much perfect except for the fan. I'm hoping to get that fixed tomorrow. I wanna ride! Today was the first nice day in about two weeks here in the frigid north.

Second...when my fan "failed" I spun it and it started working again. It just stuck for unknown reasons and has been fine since.
Edit: Unless you're in Canada I equal your frigid north and the hawk will always overheat if at a stop too long under any conditions with that fan not working. It should really never go over half way on the gauge. Just offering what I know...

Disabling failsafe's is not always the best idea. If it's just the fan, pretty easy to diagnose. Just pull the wire coming from the temp sensor and touch it to the metal of the rad when the bike is on... if the fan turns, on, you have a faulty sensor. If it doesn't there's something wrong with the wiring. +1 to checking the fuse first though, haha!

Figured out the fan problem. One of the supports of the plastic "housing" around the fan is cracked causing torsional pressure against the fan. I'll have to take off the fairing one of these days and see if I can jerry-rig it.
