REPLACING CAM CHAINS & TENSIONER HELP?
RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2000 VTR1000 WITH 37K . I AM HEARING THE DREADED CAM CHAIN NOISE .
I AM JUST WONDERING IF I SHOULD REPLACE THE CHAINS ALONG WITH THE TENSIONERS , OR IF MOST PEOPLE ONLY DO JUST THE TENSIONERS AND LEAVE THE CHAINS ALONE .
THANK YOU

Most people only change tensioners but that is presuming there is no valve, cylinder head, nor piston damage. If you were unfortunate and already had a valve hit a piston, it may be well worth replacing the timing chain for that cylinder. Good luck, hope it works out well.

Yes, if you have damage, it will be to the valves and maybe piston head. Chains are usually fine as they don't really bear the brunt of the stress. What kind of noises are you hearing (absolutely don't start it again if there were noises)
