Proud New SH Owner
Just wanted to say hello. I purchased a 1999 SH on June 3rd. My 1st bike in 6 years. Rode inline 4's previously but wanted something more rideable. After alot of reading I decided the SH was the bike for me. I looked for about two months and found one five and a half hours away. Extremely clean and only 3300 miles. I have only put about 400 miles on it since but I am very happy with the purchase. I had never ridden one before buying it. This bike is just plain fun to ride. :-D
A few questions. With having such low miles on it for the year, anything to watch/look for? It starts and runs great. I changed the oil and installed a new battery. The tires are original. The pipes, carb, etc are stock. Suspension settings are stock. Should I have all fluids changed? Buy new tires? The tires feel good. I am only a casual rider, no wheelies or scrapped knees.
Thanks,
Bob

Welcome to our world. Enjoy your stay.
If those are the original tires, I would be inclined to swap them out for some new skins. Look really good at the sidewalls and close to the beads for any weather checking. I am a little leary of older tires since they most likely will not get as sticky at temp. But, I like to push my bird pretty hard in the curves.

Those old D204s sucked when they came out in 1996. Spoon on some Pilot Powers and do some suspension work (shock/springs/revalve) and you'll be set for the life of the bike. Do suspension before you do power upgrades. You'll be happier. It totally transforms the bike.
I am a picky mongrel, and would be changing all the fliuds. Keep an eye on your cam chain tensioners, as they can get lose at any time it seems. I have a theory that the age, and not necessarily mileage, causes these to wear out. Even when the engine is not running they are under tension, and many members get high miles out of them but a lot don't either. Yours have been sitting wound up for a long time.
I would change the brake and clutch fluids and the antifreeze... You may want to replace the tires if they show any signs of cracking like was mentioned before - other than that enjoy it. Welcome to the list.

Thanks for the responses. The tires look fine, I think I will get threw the season with them and get some Pilots installed over the winter. I will change the rest of the fluids this week, cheap preventive maintenance. I may fiddle with suspension settings but other than that I will not be touching the suspsension. I just don't ride hard enough to justify the cost.
Thanks Again,
Bob

I hear you, I was considering the SV 650s, but was worried about getting bored with it. Also, they are hard to find used, more difficult than the VTR in my experience. I figured the 996 would keep me happy for the years to come. I think I made the correct decision.
