Which one to pick?
Hey everyone,
OK so i need some help. I am considering buying a new to me bike, an where I once only had two choices I now have four, that i am considering.
Those being:
97 VFR w/18,000mi asking $3900
96 VFR w/30,300mi asking $3300
03 VTR SuperHawk w/3200mi asking $4200
04 Honda 919 w/10,000mi asking $5000
Both the 97 VFR and the 919 are clean and look good, I have yet to see the other two but will shortly make that trip. There's a part of me that really likes the idea of a newer bike rather than one that is 10+ years old, and also having fuel Injection(which really low as a priority). Also the Super Hawk is just brute when it comes to that low end torque, but I have always like the VFR, just wandering what my issues will be (if any) having an older bike. Any thoughts you all may have I would appreciate.

I would say it comes down to what you like best and fits your riding needs... The newer VFR's are more comfortable for long rides but the torque from the Superhawk is hard to pass up. I was looking at the 919 before I bought my VTR and just didn't like it. The VTR also sounds the best with a set of aftermarket pipes on it. only downside to a VTR is the short fuel range, cam chain tensioner issues (easy fix if you put in the APE adjustables and supposedly the updated them as the model years progressed) and voltage regulator/rectifier issues (on older models - an '03 has the updated one)

Yeah, tough choices. No experience with the 919 but my perception of it from other owners is it's a "bland" kind of bike; no real love there, etc. But having owned at least two of each the VFR and VTR models you're looking at, I can comment on them. IMO of course.
Pros:
VFR: reliable, comfy, do-it-all nature, fuel range, exotic sound gear drive cams, smooth, reasonably torquey, nice fit/finish, centerstand, aftermarket exhaust can sound like a V8, decent handling and brakes.
VTR: TORQUE!, narrow lite feel, wheelies!, reliable, great exhaust sound with anything but stock cans, cheap fun, mods easily, decent handling and brakes.
Cons:
VFR: r/r failures, heavy, older styling, small aftermarket, very expensive plastic, PITA to work on.
VTR: r/r failures, CCT maintenance, small fuel range, low top end range, no centerstand option, minor carb issues.

THAT is the true motorcyclist attitude. It's just yer NEXT bike, not yer last. I would ride them all and pick the one that works for me. My Hawk was a cheap wreck with an interesting story that I bought from a great guy who was fairly close by. All the puzzle pieces just fit. Dropped it one day and STILL had a smile on the ride home with a busted collarbone. Love this ****!

Had a 2002 919 till last year. Great bike, solid, fast enough, I like the look. But the VTR beats it in the overall grins and fun factor.
Also 5k is a little steep for the 919.
I suggest the VTR, just for the price, miles and overall rideablitiy (if thats a word?)

2003 VTR
I was wanting to try a twin (last bike was over 10 years ago - '90 ZX-7). I found a 1650 mile mildly molested '03 for $4200. Could not be happier. Minor front end vagueness is nothing compared to the torque & sound w/ Jardine high mounts. Gonna try fork brace and spring/revalve w/ goldtech, should be enough once I lose the awful D204 OEM for a Pilot Power 2CT (rear is a Conti road attack, gonna try Pilot Road 2 there to equalize wear). Do the VTR! And yes, it's a nice blue color - the chicks dig it!

I'd go w/ the VTR. I rode Interceptors (had an '87) and VFR's (had an '92) - both were great bikes. When I decided to get back in the saddle after a couple of years' leave, I had my sights set on either a VTR or VFR. Man am I glad I went w/ the VTR - fun factor is 2x over the VFR. My best friend and riding partner has an '02 Interceptor, and he's always wanting to trade bikes. One note too, it seems than the VFR seat is harder and not as comfortable the VTR. Go w/ the torque man....
