Now that we've been formally introduced...

Hi everyone!
Just got a new to me '01 VTR1000. 5000miles. New to the forum.
I'm sure I will be asking for your help frequently.
Been riding for 30 years - first V2 and first litre bike.
So far I'm lovin' the bike! I've had it a week, what problems should I look out for?

Cheers.

Every time I ride mine to work I have to really fight it to get it to make that last right hand turn. Tends to want to go straight and speed up. I've checked tire pressures, alignments, gone over the brakes and bearings. TPS, PAIR, CCT, R/R, PIVLR all ok. I suspect it may be the dynabeads, but then someone on here told me to check the steering nut. Anyone ever experience anything like this?

It's definitely the nut steering the bike!

I think that's a surprisingly common problem... Mine has it too...

LOL besides all the things listed here, there are only 2 reliability concerns on the bike. Lots of options to upgrade, but only 2 things to watch out for.

They are the CCTs (cam chain tensioners) and the R/R (regulator / rectifier).

OEM CCTs are a wear item despite Honda saying that they are good for the life of the bike, so either replace them regularly with new ones, or once with manual ones. (APE being the most common mfg of manual CCTs). These going bad may not be super common, but common enough for me because when they fail they damage the engine and require an expensive rebuild that can be avoided easily.

The R/R is particularly bad on pre 01 bikes (no cooling fins) but even the finned ones are not perfect. (Uhci just had a finned one blow on him) Either get an aftermarket one (motovoltage.com or electrosport) or swap to a Yamaha R1/R6 one if you don't want to have to replace it after it strands you somewhere.

Thanks guys.
At what mileage should you replace the CCT?
Do you have a part # or model year for the R1/6 r/r?

Well if you know the ones you have are good, you don't idle the bike on the kickstand, and regularly change the oil: then every two valve checks or so. But if you don't know if they are any good then: right now. Since they fail without warning and at random intervals depending on maintenance and use of the bike.

As for the R/R, check the knowledge base thread here:

in fact the whole KB is useful:

Welcome, welcome.

Another problem area for this bike is that it tends to make you seek out the company of unsavory people...like the ones that frequent this forum.
