12V Plug Wiring
#2
Should be 12 volts at numerous points on the bike. GPS won't draw like heated gear. I'd be tempted to tap one of the running light wires as they are conveniently up front. Third eye wiring could be used and just leave the silly thing unplugged. If you need power with the switch off just go to the battery (in line fuse real close) or the fusebox. IMHO the gauge cluster should have a lighter socket as well as speakers and a 1/4 aux for an ipod. No DVD tho, I ain't stupid.

My tip for a GPS is to go against normal convention and power it from an unswitched power source. That way your GPS does not switch off every time you turn off the key. This prevents the unit from having to power up again and find satellites etc every time you stop.

15A would be way more than you'd need for the GPS (though it won't harm anything). My Garmin uses 10 watts, which is less than one amp. 5A would be a good size unless you're using it as a lighter too.

If you want to protect a sensitive circuit or device, rule of thumb is 25~50% higher than than peak load except for motors (depends if it has a magnetic starter). In most cases 100% safety factor is applied. So with a draw of 1 amp, a 2 amp fuse is sufficient, though a 3 amp more common.
