Well, you managed to find a hole... closest would probably be Lindköping...

But since people are lazy when it comes to registering where they are, try a thread here and find anyone close www.vtr.nu I'll gladly help out here or there (Swedish or English)... There are a lot of people here that know a lot about the VTR...

Unfortunately I'm a bit far from you, or I'd gladly try and help... I'm familiar with most parts of the VTR by now (a few parts haven't needed any care yet, so they are unknown, But I'm getting there...

Tweety,Thanks for the help I will check out that other site. Karlskoga is a bit of a hole but its ok. If you are near by send me an email or pm, we will get together for a beer. Are you swedish or an "immigrant" like me. I am from Canada.

Ok back on topic. Anyone else have a VTR noise problem story they would like to share which might help me out.
Anyone confirm the sprocket behind the clutch? What kind of noise does wear in the small end of the rod make? (Where the wrist pin is placed)
Keep'em coming guys.
Thanks
Ryan

did you ever pin point any area with the stethascope? is it possible that the oil pump could be bad? ran with out oil? ran with low coolant? have you checked your fuses to see if any are blown? does your fan come on when the bike gets hot? has the bike been over heated?

i mean you seriously have what 2500 miles on the bike?

Also i am unclear as to when the noise started? after you got the bike? it all the sudden came on with in the 300 miles you added to the milage? did you test ride the bike before you bought it? i bought mine with no test ride so i am not making fun of you. i am just trying to figure out when and how the sound came on.

You must've missed it, but I already said that the sprocket behind the clutch which drives the water pump will have some play in it.

5150, I have not pin pointed the sound yet. I have been at Power Meet for 3 days and just home. I plan on putting the bike back together and see what happens but I am not hoping for anything.
I have not got an oil light, never ran out of oil or coolant. Never overheated and the fan does come on.
Yeah, I actually have 7300 kms, bought the bike at 6800 km. I test drove the bike for 45 min when I bought the bike and it was perfectly quiet.
I ran an errand, came home, washed and waxed the bike and jumped on to find a place to take pics. Thats when I noticed it very clearly. No hard riding, no stunting of any kind, just a guy and his bike. It just started.
Thanks for the help guys.

you had it at a mechanic who stated"stop riding the bike right away" what does he think it is or was?

ok so you bought the bike, test rode it to full operating temp. the bike was nice all around. you buy the bike take it home. ride it around till you put a couple hundred miles on it. then one day you jump on the bike after owning it for a while and riding it with no adverse effects correct; go run a 45 minute errand come home (still no noise mind you) and you wash the bike? and then wax it? now you start up the bike and it makes a tapping noise but you have stated you felt no exhaust leak.

i suggest if you washed it when it was hot enough you cracked a weld on the exhaust or something to that effect. if you washed it and you know for a fact that it was not hot any where close enough to be this issue then i think it is time to tear off the top end and look in it. the miles are to low. but something has failed if you all the sudden came upon a nasty noise that made a qualified ear tell you to shut it down and stop riding it. but the only thing i can see in the sequence of external events is the washing the bike hot. anything else that has not been influenced by outside events (i.e you) would be an internal failure and it is just Force Majure(an act of God) you my friend have maybe just hit bad luck. take it back to the mechanic and let him diagnose it properly.

That is very good reasoning 5150! Probably the best one yet. If he has a scope or a piece of tubing when he finds it, the sound will make it a sure thing.

Good observation!

i washed a engine once when it felt cool to the touch. but it still was not cool enough i split some header welds and they "appeared" to be making a tapping sound too. there was not huge amounts of exhaust coming off to be felt but it was enough of a crack to cause me a noise i could not find.

i used (you know) the stuff you spray on to degrease engines. and they suggest run the car for like 10 minutes or 5 whatever it is then spray on the degreaser and then rinse it off once it has cool.

my last suggestion is the guy previous hurt the bike some how even with the low millage. i think you just want to hear that it is nothing major and are hoping it is not because of the low millage. they probably concealed the problem some how and then sold it off to you. again that or you did something that caused an issue. but you have done nothing that you have told us to cause anything major mechanically to the bike.

in my heart i lean towards the last guy duping you.

one more suggestion.. some thing from the air cleaner came loose and dropped into the chamber and it wrecking havoc in their. I.e some dip **** lost a screw in the box and it finally made its way where it is now living with the other gremlins in your combustion chamber.

one more suggestion.. valve timing wrong. valves opening incorrectly or slightly early or late. also one weak spring on only one valve. or one stuck varnished valve due to low/lack of riding and fuel being moved through.

idk the more i sit here the more i am thinking of top end problem. just tear the damn top off already look around and find the problem. you know it is in the top end just admit it and get the top off. it is either the exhaust or the top end. millage has nothing to do with failure sometimes.

please find the problem soon as it is now driving me nuts and i cant work till i know what it is. lol

5150, thank you for the suggestions. I am going to look into a few things later today. Are the head gaskets and bolts re-useable items on these bikes?

any luck yet?

Try a different mechanic too. if the last guy wasn't sure of the sound try another.

did you give any thought to my air box suggestion? something making its way into the combustion chamber? did it sound that horrific?

5150, hey, no luck yet but I had to abandon my search and take it to a mechanic in pieces. As my first post stated I was low on time and it caught up with me so I had to take it in to get it looked at by a professional.
However I did look in the airbow thing and all hardware was a accounted for. In fact, as the mileage would suggest, the screws looked like they had never been removed before.
To me the sound sounded bad but not catastrophic. Like I said I drove it, nicely, for nearly a week after the problem started.
I hope it will turn out to be something minor. We will see.
If they find it which won't be till next week. Ill post the findings if it is not the common run of the mill VTR problems.
Cheers

i would like to know what the problem turns out to be either way. i am losing sleep over this thing. lol. i hope it turns out to be a exhaust leak rattling around. that would be the best out of all the things we all thought it might be.

good luck.

there's a lot of could be's, but when people are taking the time and effort to help you when you're up against the wall, it's only a small courtesy to say thanks and let people know the outcome. This guy could have fallen into a hole for all we know, but the more likely scenario is, "when I don't need your help anymore, it's too hard for me to type a few words of appreciation or explanation because it's all about me". Maybe this belongs in the "Rant" section, huh/
