Re: The new guy and his VTR

You have a great looking standard/naked/streetfighter.
Obviously I have to agree on the side mounted radiators but I have to ask how you found room for the front mounted radiator.
I had looked at a 599 ( Hornet ) radiator which is the smallest Honda radiator I could find that would have enough volume to deal with the heat. I could not get it into a place where it would clear the upside down forks lock to lock and still allow a fan for stop and go traffic.

Here is also another pic of mine with a simple graphic added to the tank to visually reduce it's size.
I was able to go 180 miles on one tank and it took 5.3 gallons which left a theoretical .2 gallons. nothing like cutting it close.

Wink The not so new guy and his VTR

Hi everybody,
Talk about surprised when I saw that thread up just now.
Since it's up I'll provide a bit of an update.
No I'm not ready to sell it yet but as we all know.....money talks........
I've ridden the bike in it's naked guise now for over a year and half and is has not given me a lick of trouble...almost.
Going to Laguna Seca last year it came close to overheating which is why it now has two fans and on this years trip it actually ran cooler than the VFR800's I was riding with.
One fan is actuated by the fan switch while the second fan is operated by a rather more complex computer system that determines when to turn the fan on based on ambient temp/speed/coolant temperature.
I also got 203 miles on a tank and had about another 20 miles worth of fuel left when I filled up. Gotta love that VFR tank.

Hey Kai. Where did you get the handlebar risers?

The risers are from a latemodel CB750 (2001-2005) which bolt to a stock CBR929 upper tripleclamp through home made spacers.
The spacers sandwich the upper tripleclamp and are bolted to each other for strength.

Did you just make the spacers by trial and error? I'm about to put a 954 front end on my Hawk and this is the perfect solution to the handlebar problem, although I'll probably go with a flat bar in order to keep the cables and lines stock and avoid fairing clearance problems.
The other easy solution I have seen is to go with risers made by freestyle ingenuity, but they aren't nearly as clean looking as the ones you made.

Eyeball Engineering as opposed to trial and error.
I only made one set and they're on the bike. I had a good idea as to where I wanted them to end up and just started hacksawing and filing on some round barstock. The hard part was matching the contour of the tripleclamp on the riser, both on the top and the underside.
Once I had them matched up I drilled a pilot hole through both sides, laid them out symmetrically on the tripleclamp, marked and drilled the hole.
Once that was done I enlarged the pilot hole to match the clamp studs, installed those and then drilled and tapped two holes on each side through the risers so that they would be securely attached to the tripleclamp.
I've included a drawing that hopefully will make it a little more clear as to what I'm actually talking about.

A much better way of phrasing it. Thanks for the drawing. That makes it perfectly clear.

It would appear that all the pictures for this thread got lost in the big disaster last year,

Is there any chance of getting them restored or posted to the galleries?

Worth 1000 words, etc!!!

TIA

Hawkrider, can I attach them to the original posts, one by one, to maintain the chronology ?

I've made several attempts at attaching pics, but a lot of them are bigger than the 97 kb limit.
For the life of me I cannot figure out how to reduce them properly.
Bringing them down to 800x600 doesn't change the pixel count.
Help.

Thank you Hawkrider

Thanks alot for your help today.
I've attached all the pertinent pics, if anybody wants more let me know.
I've included pics to show the current state with double fans.
Not to mention the handguards that I installed over a years ago, sorry.
That came about when I realized how my hands were staying warm on my XR even without heated grips.......
I also installed an adjustable switch for my second fan which kept the running temp at or below 190 F. It really killed my mileage and took about 20 miles out of my range.
I will see what it does with it adjusted to the 190-200 F range.

Thanks again Kai Ju, I know that was a lot of work to upload a second time.

As an aside, I won a Honda Shadow 1100 radiator on eBay yesterday. It measures about the same as the VTX unit you used.

And, I found a welder who will do the tank mods I need to use the CBR1100XX tank I have,

I do admit to being better at buying parts than at actually installing them. This may be just the encouragement I need. <G>

so running cooler decreased your MPG and range? bummer, I just ordered that pricey fan switch off epay...

Running cooler and fuel mileage

I have to admit that the more I think about this the less sense it makes.
I don't have a tie-in between the coolant temp and the fuel metering, like a fuel injected bike does.
Also my bike usually runs between 207 -194 F, which is my fan cycling. Looking at most of the numbers posted by guys with stock cooling systems my fan comes on early.
When I was running yesterday my temp never went over 200 F. I've adjusted the switch to where the fan now comes on at 205-206 F which is just below the stock fan switch temp of 207 F. It cycled normally on the way to work this morning but should take care off high speed / high temp runs when it really heatsoaks and a single fan can't do it.
Also, I was running the snot out of it in the canyons which may explain the worse than normal mileage.
In short, install your switch and see what happens.

I am looking at the tank change to increase my enjoyment. I will probably buy a crashed VTR tank to get more hardware and maybe pick up the VFR seat for a donor pan.

I already have a fabricator online to adjust the tank for fitment and bracketry duties.

My thinking tis to modify the tank the full 100 % so the stock tank can still be used and replaced if necessary.

All the changes I've made to the bike are reversible, not that I'd want to do that though.
The tough part will be the back of the VFR fuel tank to the VTR seat junction and I don't know if the VFR seat pan will fit the VTR subframe.
If you have any questions, please ask away.

Let's pull this one back to the top. I found the correct radiator to relocate mine to the rear. I've got the filler neck coming and looking for the overflow tank currently. My question is, could you post a pic of the hose routing up the left side?

Took me awhile to find the radiator. I like it! It needs a rear fender to protect it from rocks.

Here you go.......
I'm no longer running the fan under the radiator since I went to the VFR tank which allowed installation of two fans above the radiator.
But it is a workable solution.
As I have said many times before, this works because I have two fans. One is enough for most conditions but if you're doing 90 plus for extended periods of time you need two.
I still don't have natural airflow but I've noticed that my back pack levitates at speed which tells me that the area above the seat and behind me is the true low pressure area.
Eventually I'm going to open the tailsection along either side of the passenger seat in the hope that it will draw the air from directly above the tire through the radiator, or not.

Let me know if these pics are enough.
