Looses engine power
Looses engine power
Hey folks --- wonder if anyone else has experienced this ---
I was riding to work on the freeway yesterday and around 85mph my bike started loosing power despite me giving it more throttle. I pulled to the berm, downshifted, revved the rpms and it sputtered and came back to life so I got back on the roadway and took off again. Around 90mph it did it again. I stopped at the Honda dealership and it idled fine and throttle response was perfect. The tech thought maybe it was just too cold (temp was roughly 46deg F). I don't think that was the case.
Ever since I got it (I'm second owner, had under 7000miles on it 4yrs ago, now has 12,500) my bike occasionally makes a "chug/knock/" type noise (hate to use knock as a description but can't think of anything else. The tech there said he thought it was one of the timing chain tensioners, so I'm replacing that.
So leaving work --- it's about a 5min ride to the freeway. I got on and again --- same thing. I exited the freeway and rode home on side streets with no problems.....
Mind you I can tinker with my bike but I am in no way able to really "work" on it....
Any thoughts? Thanks,

I'd check the vaccum hose isn't split, and same also for the petcock rubber diaphragm.
"chug/knock/" type noise is 'carb fart' - like a stumbling cough not serious except if it causes the bike to stall which could be awkward say in a low speed turn. Make sure carbs are balanced, TPS is set to spec and idle set to 1200/1300.
In case you haven't heard already the VTR's OEM CCTs can spontaneously self-destruct so recommend you fit manual tensioners (see below).
