looking to buy a vtr1000
If it had original paint then yes, but since it's been repainted the price he can get for it suffers...it will be the most fun you'll ever find for $3200, but you may be able to get it cheaper or find one with mods/updates and original paint on this forum for that price...my 2 cents,RC

Maybe this helps, just paid $3,700 for an 03 w/ 5,500 miles, never been laid down. Given the market, time of year (in New England) and the book value, I thought I got a very fair deal. I know another one, same year, same mileage, w/ new tires and chain (never been laid down), w/ a fuel gauge transmitter not working sold for $4,000 in January.
I'm just getting back into it after a 30 year break, but had 3 bikes before and would caution you that this is a torquey 100HP bike. You should go to bike school, wear protective clothing and be very conservative with your right hand!

last july i bought my 00 with 18kkms for $3250cad(~$2800usd). it "fell off the stand", and i determined that to be true. original paint. overall in ok condition. haven't had a prob with it. have had many enjoyable miles with it.

I suppose you checked ebay. there are a couple hawks on today. Try to get one with low mileage. These bikes are great for a new rider because they have so much torque it's easy in that you don't have to be concentrating on the rpms or what gear you're in as much an in-line four that needs to be in the power range for passing, coming out of turns, etc. In terms of cost, the cheapest is not necessarily the best as you will soon discover if you buy the wrong bike.
insurance shouldn't change too much, wth similiar coverage the hawk is usally considered sport touring. If you have been riding the bandit for a while you should have no problems with the hawk even as a beginner just be aware that horsepower can get you into trouble alot quicker... just got to be smart about it. And for $3200 seems fairly priced.

you know what, honestly, after dropping my baby due to simply grabbing too much front brake and going through all of my growing pains on the bike...... I suggest to all my friends to force yourself to buy a piece of **** bike for 500 or 1000 cash and get comfortable. if you drop it, **** it, its already jacked anyway. If i could do it over again, i would have played on a POS bike for one season, then bought my hawk. I REALLY think you should do this.
Since this is your first bike or new rider, you are probably better off on a 600 because most new riders usually find out they're not really into the sport because of a personal connection, rather because of friends getting bikes, a whim, or other spurious or superficial reasons.
Whatever the reasons for getting started, some will become motorcyclists while most will lose interest over the years, when their friends drop out or for other reasons.
The probabilities are low for those becoming lifelong bikers and given this, the 600 will be easier to get rid of without losing money or time because it is the most popular bike in the USA. So this is likely the best option for you.
twin vs. inline 4:
as written previous post, Twins(vtr)are great for a new rider because they have so much torque it's easy in that you don't have to be concentrating on the rpms or what gear you're in as much an in-line four that needs to be in the power range for passing, coming out of turns, etc. In terms of cost, the cheapest is not necessarily the best as you will soon discover if you buy the wrong bike.
The main thing with any bike is to get good instruction from schools and road riders who espouse responsible riding habits and those who will point out common riding faults and encourage skills that encourage longevity.
There are certain habits and mindset that are necessary for surviving road riding for any significant length of time because riding the streets is infinitely more dangerous than racing or other closed circuit pursuits.
Good luck with the new bike whatever you decide on, and learn quickly from your mistakes.
thanks, Nathan

education
I see that you are taking the BRC (basic rider course) in 2 weeks, good for you.
Take the ERC (experienced rider course) in a year or two. This way any bad habits that develop will be kept to a minimum.
