Larger fuel tank

I am seriously considering purchasing a 98 VTR. I noticed that the fuel capcity was increased a couple of models later. Will those tanks fit on the 98 frame? I've always like this bike and still have the 97 Honda sales brochure when I originally checked one out. This is a stretch but I'll go ahead and ask. Has anyone fitted a Kilktronic or Pingel electric shifter on their VTR? I lost my left let in a car/mc accident in 76 but have been riding ever since. I fitted a Pingel to a 2000 SV 650 and it worked like a charm. I need to move the left footpeg forward a bit but I know some very capable mechanic/fabricators so I'm sure we can figure it. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
I hope that other members can help you with the electic shifter issue.
Australians, New Zealanders (I assume) and Europeans got the 19 l. tank on 2001 and later Firestorms. Canadians and Americans got stuck with the original 16 l. tank. A few people have modified a VFR tank successfully. There are some other options depending on how much time, trouble and expense you want to go through. As far as I know, Honda Canada and American Honda never made the 19 l. tank available to North American dealers.

Thanks for your quick reply. Interesting that the U.S. never got the 19 L option. I see the 100 mile range as the only major limitation if you really like to ride. There's not a lot of gas stations in the most scenic areas we all like to ride to. Certainly not a deal breaker though. You would think the frames would be the same and that a 19 would bolt right on. But I could be wrong! Someone out there will know.

They're exactly the same fit... the 19 L tanks are just very hard to find. You'll have to find one overseas probably, and there are a lot of people interested.

Little Horse expanded the capacity of his- not sure how far along the project is:

Many members have fit a VFR tank on that has seemed to work very well:

Or you can go all out and spend the big bucks:
