Hawk Running Sluggish When Hot

Hawk Running Sluggish When Hot
I have noticed then once my hawks temp guage gets about half way (where it should be) the bike runs slugish. If i'm in town riding it will tend to shut off when I come to a traffic light. It starts right back up, but I know somethings not right.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remedy this problem.
I was kinda thinking maybe go a little smaller on the jets or maybe raising the needles by one clip.
Just not sure the best way to try to fix this. When its cold the bike runs strong, just when hot does it act up.
Someone point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Chris

Give this link a check, sounds as if you are running rich too me, raising the needles (moving clip down) would only make the engine more rich.
I live at 500 feet above sea level in hot 90plus degree humid summer weather and here is my jet settings. I also have Jardine high pipes, K&N filter, and Factory Pro ignition advance with smog system removed and TBR plugs installed

> Pilot jets: 48 (I bought these from local dealer, 45's were too small, 50
from Factory Pro were too big)
> Factory Pro Ti needle position: 4 from top.
good luck

Re: Hawk Running Sluggish When Hot
I know this is going to sound silly.... but how did you decide the 50's were too big? The most notable thing I see with the 50's newly installed is that the bike will pretty much start without the choke from cold. It will also start really "soft" when warmed up, not the crisp BBRRAAAPPP you'd usually hear. Seems to run ok at 2nd gear steady state cruise (though 4k rpm seems a little high to test this on a 'hawk).

Re: Hawk Running Sluggish When Hot
Anyway, here is how i got to the settings i have today.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Honda factory jets and settings at time of carb first removal
> Mains Frt: 175 Rear: 178
> slow speed 45
> Stock needles
> Air Screws (turns out) Frt: 3.25 Rear: 2.75
Installed K&N Filter, Factory Pro jet kit, and Jardine Oval high pipes with Std. Baffle P/N 18-1009-122-02.
Inital jet kit setting:
> Mains Frt: 180 Rear: 182
> slow speed 50
> Factory Pro needle position: 3 from top.
> Air Screws (turns out) Frt: 2.5 Rear: 2.5
> Symptons with above setting:
Hot weather 85 degrees,
slight surge @ cruise,
idle fluctuates @ times.
Cold weather 60 degrees,
stumble from off idle with throttle,
surge more noticable(choke helps surge go away, which indicates lean mid-range),
idle worse than when hot.
Idle fluctating from 800rpm to 13000rpm.
> Second adjustment to resovle above problems:
Raised needle position to 4 from top.
Symptons after raising needle position:
Still had rough idle, surge resolved.
> I then did my final adjustment to reach the settings Previously.
> I removed the #50 Factory Pro jet kit supplied pilot
jets and installed #48 pilot jets and adjusted the air screws to 3 turns
out.
> The Factory Pro site shows and mentions changing the emulsion tube on this bike to resolve an idle problem, so i did so.
This is the tube that the main jet screws into and the Honda dealers microFiche or computer will not list it as an emulsion tube so be aware.
Just go by your local dealer and look at the parts break down yourself.
Order the rear Emulsion tube (about 2 inches long and then main jet
screw directly into it, if i recall it may be described as main jet holder or
something like that). Be sure you are ordering the rear one so be
familiar with carb layout, the fiche does not show front or rear descriptions.
If you have to make an adjustment, put this rear emulsion tube in the front carb. Both carbs will then have rear tubes. They are different on stock carbs.

Re: Hawk Running Sluggish When Hot
my '98 was doing the same thing, and when it rained on me, it would stumble and miss terribly. I took the seat/gastank/airbox off and was playing with the carb, and I got shocked by the rear plug wire. I replaced it (which is hardwired to the coil), and voila!!! Much better now.

Hey Thumper I'd like to know where you live that 85 is hot and 60 is cold. Sounds like a great place to live. Better then here where 95 is getting hot with 100% humidty and winter touches the low teens.
