gas mileage
how large is the gas tank on a 2000 superhawk 996. the book tells me its 4.23 gallons but for some reason i only get 80miles to a tank of gas. is that the right amount or what should be checking for. is the tank smaller than what the book says it is? i need to find out how to troubleshoot this problem. please any suggestions,comments,answers would be welcome. thx

After Stage 1 Jet Kit - the mileage sunk like a lead weight -
I recently tested my mileage - not by choice
And fuel light came on @ 107 - made to 133 - didn't run out - I believe when I filled up I took 3.9 & change
Wasn't gunning the gas for the last 40 miles of ride.
Thus - I typically get about 32 mpg - about the same as my Civic

Last 2 full day rides I refilled with my group at about 125 miles, didn't have the fuel gauge hooked up, but I had some gas left at 125. I have a set of MIG pipes, jetted right to match, K&N air filter, sprockets are down one in front and up 2 in back. I wasn't gentle with it sometimes. Some of the best riding ever.

Get your bike serviced...or do it yourself. Make sure parts are clean and running smoothly. And take it a little easier on the revs. I get around 80 miles to a tank if I'm racing through the hills in high rpms. Try not to rev it up so much and you will see a huge difference in your fuel mileage.

rooskie;
Can't tell from your posts if you have crummy fuel mileage or a crummy low fuel warning light.
Start this way;
Fill the fuel tank and zero the tripmeter. Ride for a hundred miles or until the fuel light comes on. Fill the fuel tank to the same level as you did last time. Divide the number of miles traveled by the amount of fuel burned. That's your mpg. All we know so far is that the light comes on at 80 miles. You need to tell us what your mileage is.

I tend to fill at ~90 miles as that is the distance from my house to Prescott up 89a and that is my favorite ride.. But the RLOD (red light) usually takes between 95 and 120 miles to come on depending on how hard I ride it. I always reset the trip meter every fill up as I trust it more than that angry red LED.

This is helpful info about the gas mileage. I have wondered if my gauge is off...... I ran about 85 miles on last tank and my gauge said empty.... I filled and it was only 2.6 gal. That puts me at around 34 mpg, which is good since I carry my 85 lb. daughter to school everyday.
Any fixes on the gauge? It seems like that might be the issue on this thread too, I know there is more gas in there but never want to risk it, especially with a passenger. Thanks gangsters!

FYI... If you don't like RLOD only there is a "fix"...
If you care to spend the money for the float arm from a never model VTR I can easily make a 6 LED fuel gauge to hook up to it... You get a 5 LED readout of the fuel level and a 6'th LED that comes on when completely empty, like the RLOD... this you can easily locate in the place of the RLOD (or in the place of the bulb on a different gauge, like mine from a CBR...)
I already did the designs since a friend on the Swedish VTR forum asked me about it... The circuit is small enough to go by normal mail to the US as long as you hook up the LED's and such yourself, so shipping it shouldn't be a problem...
