Defensive Driving Course

Just finished taking a 4 hour defensive driving course for the speeding ticket I got on the hawk. Brought back memories of drivers ed. At least it wasn't as bad as the 8 hour one my wife took in Cali. Anyone else had the great fortune of taking this course? Would be nice if they had more information about watching out for motorcycles. Of course in TN they don't really take driver training too seriously.

No, but they do name sections of highways after drunk, cokehead state legislators who kill motorcyclists.

I just completed a course last week given by AAA, 6 hours here in NY but good for 3 years and 10% off collision and liability on my bikes and trucks. You do learn a few things during the classes but unfortunately only a small percentage of folks take the course - I would almost like to see it mandatory every 5-10 years so those who really need their skills refreshed get it. Like they said in the class "driving is the most dangerous thing you do everyday"

Rick, you must've talked with the Military.

Now that they are tracking motorcycle accidents, injuries and deaths, they think that there is a huge problem.

So as a result, we now take the BRC and within 60 days are required to take either the ERC, for standards and cruisers, or the new MSRC (ARCST for the equivalent Civilian taught course) for us sportbike guys. We also have to renew every 3 years.

Here in California it's called Traffic School, and it keeps a ticket from raising your insurance. I first took it in 1969, at the start of the program, and I've taken it a number of times since. The last was maybe 6 years ago (knock on wood). You can't repeat it for 18 months. It's an 8 hour class.

They usually ask everyone what their "pet peeve" is, and someone always says "motorcyclists going between the lanes", or just motorcycles in general. To which I reply that "lane splitting" is legal in Cal, and how it possibly saved my life once. It's amazing how many don't know that.

So although it's a waste of a Saturday, it's sometimes enlightening to drivers who don't have a connection to motorcycles. And I'm always happy to keep my insurance rates down.

Knock on wood I haven't had to go to the traffic school class in quite a long time - its a kittle different than this course... I take it for the insurance discount
