Question Buying a VTR what should I offer?

I am looking at a 98 VTR, it has new Bridgestones and generally looks fairly good. The chain and sprockets are tired. His shop said one more season. I can see it has light hooking on the rear sprocket. It has about 22000 miles. The kicker is it has been dropped. Hit a patch of gravel and went down on the left side. The muffler, clutch lever, footpegs, muffler hanger, mirror were replaced. The fairing is scrapped in three places and the turn signal is more or less just hanging. Looking inside from the front I can see missing and some broken fairing mounts, although the fairing seems to be secure at the main points. It does not seem to be leaking any coolent from the rad. The shop checked it out as okay, nothing twisted. The rest of the bike looks undamaged.
The asking price is $4500. What should I offer? Or just walk away? Thanks

walk away......
You should be able to find something in much better condition and shape in the 3k-4k range. I picked up my '99 VTR for $2800 with 8000 miles on the clock.

So keep looking, or lowball them and see what happens....

I agree
for that price you could be in the 2002-3 range, well cared for without damage

Don't, even think about buying that bike! Don't ever think that you should reconsider! There are lots a great well cared for bikes out there, be patient and you will be rewarded.

inderocker is an unknown quantity at this point
Talk him down to $2,500, or walk away. I see '98's advertised for $3,500 in good condition all of the time.
I paid $3,000 for my '05 with only 4,500 miles on the clock.

I bought my '04 with 3K miles last year for 5000 and it was in perfect condition. Just be patient and the right deal will come along. Looking back, I'm glad I passed on a couple of bikes.

I got my 02 for $700, but it needed a little work. Salvage buying is a good way to go if you can work on bikes.

My '03 was $4200 with 1650 miles. Competition Works? metal tray fender eliminator and a (small) crack in the right upper fairing. Otherwise in good shape.

I ran the Kelley Blue Book on my '99 Hawk, (9000 miles - excellent condition..) it booked @ $3800. Walk away from that machine, unless you can get it for under 2 grand....

I agree with the others - another man's trash is another man's gold - except with motorcycles.

Insurance totaled mine with less damage and I bought it back for $1100. That would be a fun project for about the same price. Definitely no more than $2k.
