3 odd possible Problems

#1 After letting go of the throttle it tends to stay at 3,000 rpm for 1-2 second then drops to normal rpms.

#2 When I sit at a light it knocks then drops rpms and stalls sometimes.

#3 I can hear a poof like noise from the front and it decelerates for that poof.

#1 Is the throttle sticking, or is it after you actually turn the throttle back? I had a my throttle sticking before, it needed cleaning (the actual part that turns on the handle)

#2 Mine did this before I did my CCT's I can't imagine it was related, but after doing the swap it stopped. I think it probably just needed to get more riding time to clean out the jets.

#3 No idea, hopefully someone else has something to add here.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. You might have an open vacuum port on one of your carbs, or your intake boots are loose or broken.

Do you mean were the carbs mean the engine or the breather box?
I will check them out.

It may be an intake leak but... I've noticed that 01 and up VTR's do not return to idle as quickly as the previous years. Why? I do not know for sure, but It may have something to do with the updated CDI & ECU for 01 and up VTR's. My VTR does the same thing and the two 2002's, 2003 and 2004 VTR's I've owned did the same thing as well. When I first got my '05 I chased that issue like crazy until I got another late model VTR an found it did the same thing

#1 The throttle moves freely up top but I don't know about around the carbs

#2 I think I might have to change the CCT's then. I can hear noise from the chain or the guides or something. Were they easy to change?

#3 Pending

There is a KB sticky on it here in the forum, and my signature links to a PDF I compiled from several sources including pics from when I did it.

It is easy, but don't skip any of the steps or you can damage things.

Lubricate your cables and set your throttle cable freeplay to spec . per service manual (2-6 mm) . Just for starters .

If you had a leak it would be under the butterfly's, or where the carbs meet the engine.

Any luck finding out whats wrong?

Are #2 and #3 related? Do they happen at the same time sometimes? If so some people call it carb backfiring, or burping. Most guys say a carb sync will fix it, or possible rejetting, and TPS mod.

Any mods done yet?
