Need an odd favor.
I am in the process of swapping form a '98 gauge cluster to an '02 cluster.
Everything is done but the temp sensor. I screwed up and shorted out the sensor and had to order a new one. New one came in and does not work. So I have ordered another and waiting on it. I have double and triple checked everything. I hooked up the original cluster and tried the temp gauge with it and got the same as the '02. Have done all the sensor test in the manual. All points to a bad sensor.
I wanting to double check the out put voltage from the gauge cluster to the sending unit. If some one could pull the lead off the lower sensor on the thermostat housing and let me know the voltage that would be great.
Just want to make sure the gauge cluster doesn't have and issues since it came off my wrecked '02 and has been sitting for a few years.
Thanks,
Verne

Thanks. I'm getting 4.8 to 4.9. Wonder if that is part of my problem or voltmeter just out of speck.
Plugged the new sensor in and grounded it out. Got the same reading from it as the one in it. Guess I better start looking for a new cluster, unless I can figure this out.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Verne

As soon as you turn the key on it goes to 250-256 range. Following the test outlined in the manual to unplug the sensor and then ground out the wire to the sensor. When unplugged it goes back to "---" but when grounded out it jumps to 270. That indicates that it is a bad sensor according to the manual. But now wondering if something got messed up in the cluster. If I knew some one close with an '01 or up I would just barrow theirs and try it.

I checked the other day and it was good. But I am going to do a straight ground to the main frame ground and try that.
Hopefully I can find some one in middle TN with an '01 or up and borrow there cluster to try.

Well just got back from a short ride down to fill up the tank to make sure the fuel gauge is working. Worked like a charm. So now I am leaning towards the gauge being bad. Since the whole cluster runs off the same ground and everything else is working as it should.
