What does that CE mark really mean

I do see a lot of folks referencing the CE markings on motorbike gear but do you know what it really means?

Well in a word, nothing......

Unlike the US UL listing in which an independent organization tests and certifies a product, the CE listing is just a declaration by the manufacturer that their product conforms to a standard.
While most manufactures follow the rules, it is rather easy to just fill out the paperwork and get a CE label with no real testing done.

So while it might be nice to see the CE marking, you really shouldn't use it as a basis to make you choice on......

FAQ
What does the CE marking on a product indicate?

By affixing the CE marking to a product, the manufacturer declares on his/her sole responsibility that the product is in conformity with the essential requirements of the applicable directives providing for its affixing and that the relevant conformity assessment procedures have been fulfilled. Products bearing the CE marking are presumed to be in compliance with the applicable directives and hence benefit
from free circulation in the European Market.
