Airbox Holes (?)

Airbox Holes (?)
So, my I was working on my hawk, opened the airbox (k&n installed) and noticed some "extra" holes... should these be blocked off? Is this leak the reason why the k&n may not help as much vs stock based on some of the posts? What are the 3 holes in the lower right of the airbox? Seems like they should be blocked off so that dirty air doesnt leak into the system below the filter... thanks for help.

The K&N I have came with rubber inserts to block these off. They definitely should be plugged, but that's not why K&Ns don't help as much as people think they should.

I learned this well and each time I ignored that learning, it cost me dearly. I'm not saying that all dealers or that all mechanics are poor, but you need to know who's working on your bike and that he or she cares about the quality of their work. One problem is that they are oft under time constraints and if there's one thing that you don't need is a mechanic passing over or missing things that could cost you later and to which you have no recourse.

mine came with little foam pieces. I would suggest goign to vip and getting a foam/filter type piece that you can fit in there. at the very least block it off. when i got into the airbox for the first time i noticed the side of the foam that was exposed to the outside was VERY dirty, so don't leave it open to the elements.

Just to add to what Killer5280 and NAVYATR said. You've got to use the rubber block-offs or the engine will drawn in unfiltered air. Also, each of the places blocked off should have a small foam filter element covering the three holes before the block-offs are installed.

Just in case some people don't know this: If you get a BMC filter instead of a K&N you don't have to worry about the block-off plugs. They are part of the filter, just like stock.
I just thought I'd mention this because in the past I've seen a few threads regarding problems with K&N and these block-off deals.

First, thank you for the replies, info, and diagram!
I would think that the diaphragms would be able to breathe fresh air regardless of those holes and the additional mini foam filters. perhaps I am missing something.
Can any one possibly shed some light into the design of the airbox, or explain the holes?
Thanks

update, k&n sent me the 'caps' for the airbox holes at no cost/no shipping... sweet!
... best part was when the operator said "put a cap in it!" - LOL maybe you had to be there... still curious why all those holes are there like its been shot...
