What year fuel tanks will fit a 2000 VTR1000 SuperHawk?
Hi all. First post.
I need to buy a used fuel tank for my 2000 SuperHawk after the bike fell against a concrete post and landed on the tank - creasing it beyond repair. Of course new tanks aren’t available on Earth.
I found a scratched one but nervous that it won’t fit my 2000. Scratched used ones ("no dents, promise") are going for $250-$450 plus shipping. I read ugly stories of $$ down the toilet if its the wrong year - e.g., wrong size tank cap assembly or seat side attachment flange being too wide to fit.
My local Honda parts Dept says “he thinks 1998-2002 should fit”, but only because the fuel tank part numbers begin with the same prefix - which he says is the only way he knows to tell. Hoping one of you may have done previous research on VTR’s from these years and can offer some better verification before I cross my fingers and throw down hundreds.
Helpful suggestions for getting back to normal welcome.
Way too much bullshit from your dealer or whoever else is feeding you these "ugly stories..." they all fit and are the same on the outside. (19L tank aside, which wasn't sold in the USA. Regardless it still fits any year). If you use a tank from '01 or later you'll need to swap to the earlier (meaning swap yours over) sending unit and just make sure it's moving through it's full range of motion inside the tank. It's pretty easily bent to do so. I did it when swapping an earlier tank to an '02. '01 and later has a fuel gauge on the dash. Yes you'll come across oddballs like the tank I have in the classifieds, which I bought from Greece, which has a smaller filler neck because I don't know, they must have funky gas pumps or something there... But the tank itself is the same. I just used an aftermarket non-locking cap.
Is your bike still the original yellow? Yeah at this point finding an undented original paint yellow tank might be a challenge. If you want it now you might have to repaint one.
The stories are from Googling, and yes I think your fuel tank cap tale is one of those I read. So that fitting problem relates to country released in rather than model year. Glad to know there's a workaround.
I'm new at SH's ... will a Firestorm tank work as well? The guys' unable to tell me what year its from but it looks similar....
The bikes in the shop ATM so I can' t check: Do you know if theres a part # /serial # on the fuel tank I might be able to cross check?
Yes I got a paint shop lined up and bought the OEM yellow paint but can't find the winged Honda logo decal in the right size ("HONDA" = 4 5/8")

Yes - a Firestorm '97-'01 tank will fit - later model (generally*) had a larger capacity 19L tank but with a different fuel tap.
*Some early models were registered after '01. The silver one looks like an early model but to be sure check the VIN to find the year of manufacture.
Decals can be ordered from Honda - you just need to know the year of your bike and colour code (on rear subframe under the seat) - though early ones are becoming unsupported parts wise but a later models decals if yellow should be available.
Or download vector file and take to local vehicle graphics sign maker to make to whatever size and colour you require in vinyl.
A "Firestorm" and a "Superhawk" are the same bike. They just called it a Firestorm outside the USA and the tank graphics (along with some more color options) are going to be different. Also outside the USA (In most places I believe) '01 and later grew from a 16L to a 19L tank. With regards to the gas cap, that's the ONLY one I've ever seen like that in 20 years. You could just have someone measure the inlet diameter of whatever you're buying to be sure. But if it comes with the gas cap and key it would be a non-issue. Otherwise the sending unit/float is your only possible issue and again, it's fairly straightforward (if even necessary), to bentd the float arm to move through it's full range of motion so as to not hit anything inside the tank. And that's simply so either your fuel light (pre '01) or fuel gauge ('01 onwards) reads correctly.
Unlike the bodywork there's not a part# actually ON the tank that I know of. But it's really not necessary.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like they're still available from Ronayers or Partzilla.

Have you seen a confirmed California model VTR gas tank?
Many CA bikes I have had to deal with have a different tank/cap plus a gas vapor recovery system that non CA bikes do not have..
The California version VTR uses a different fuel system (VPT3C Vs. VPT3B)
Tank fitment to frame and seat would be the same of course and the only way it would matter on a NON CA bike is how you vent the tank.....so a CA tank if different can be used on any model VTR..
A CA bike if it uses a different tank/cap, would only need that specific type if the user retained the charcoal canister vapor recovery system
I just can not seem to confirm if the tank and cap are different, or its just the CA EVAP system added on to the common across all models fuel tank
Awesome thanks so much for the info guys. Especially interesting and concerning is that a California model might have different specs and system due to their emissions regulations. This isn't a California model so hopefully it won't affect me knock on wood.
I'm moving forward buying the tank from Canada. The guy sent pics of it with a ruler next to the brackets & it looks to measure correctly to mine. I'll have to watch for the float arm working right. The Honda shop can help with that when they transfer the fittings from old tank to the newly painted one.
Those tank decals are no longer available for this bike. Believe me I tried. I was just getting ready to recreate that logo in Illustrator for my decal print shop so that .eps really hits the spot.
I found and bought a tank on eBay and supposed to get it next week - fingers x'ed it looks like the pics - and got some decals printed that will work fine. Thanks for trying to help!
