water pump weep hole

hi all.aussie needs help.. ive had lots of honda service techs contradicting advice. if the seals are stuffed in the water pump can coolant go into oil ? does coolant come out of weep hole when seals are stuffed and if it does not are seals ok ? some say that sometimes no coolant will weep out but seals could be still stuffed and allow coolant into oil. others say if no weepping out of hole, seals are ok and that is not the problem. whos right? just had heads "CCTs" done and new coolant tank, but coolant still getting in oil. milky oil

The design shouldn't in theory allow coolant into the crankcases as it should leak externally from the weep hole - but worth investigating if you first rule out head gasket as the cause of coolant getting in oil esp after you say you had "head" work done...

Uh.. that sounds pretty random relative to the complaint. I don't see how either maintenance item would have any bearing on the symptom.

Are there other issues/clues going on with the bike? Like does your exhaust smell particularly sweet? Is there any whitish smoke visible in the exhaust? Did you replace the coolant tank because it was nasty black with grunge contaminants? Cause if any or all that's going on I agree with Wicky it's more like a head gasket/warped mating surface.

no other issues with bike. coolant tank had split in it. bike runs and starts fine. no smoke or backfiring.

I don't know what you mean when you say seals are "stuffed". Doesnt translate to NYC biker talk. If you have a milkshake coolant thing then good percent chance its a blown head gasket.

You should change all fluids and keep watch. Has the bike overheated, been starved of oil or coolant? Been over-reved even on a downshift?

Are you getting coolant out the weephole?

stuffed means worn out. there is coolant in oil. not oil in coolant. no coolant out of weep hole. bike was running hot when i bought. running cool now after fixing cracked coolant tank and changing coolant. maybe been starved of coolant as other owner told me to check level before a ride. 2+2=4 some honda tech said possible water pump even though no weep hole leak. but others say differant.

heres soom history on bike. 1999 model .owner i bought off said he bought from bike shop. 2 weeks later CCT failed , bike shop fixed under their warranty. couple months later other CCT failed. bike shop apparently put 2 new heads on bike .WHY ?under warranty. bike shop took 5 months fixing it. owner had had enough and sold it. to me. ive rang bike shop and explained my prob and they say possible water pump. im reluctant to take to them because they want to pull apart and charge $$ . others saying not that.

got a gut feeling that it might be a cracked head or block or cylinder. if so this is gunna cost big $$. whats your thoughts on putting ceramic head sealer through system.

Usually it's the front CCT that fails damaging valves - hence why they replaced the head though replacing both seems excessive, and there could be doubt about how well they did the work. Along with it running hot for a while could have caused other damage. Depending how you're equipped the only way to find if the previous work fixed things is to get some tools, manual and start inspecting. This will keep costs down if you can do as much yourself rather than paying workshop labour charges.

If the engine is buggered then finding a secondhand engine is an option. Hopefully you bought it cheaply as some money will be needed to get it running reliably, along with manual CCTs to keep them from self-destructing again.

From your history above, it sounds like after each CCT failed, the head was replaced to correct the resultant bent valves. This is probably the easiest / most economical way to fix in that situation. Perhaps in one or both instances, the shop did poor work or chose not to install a new head gasket if they managed to get a head off with a reasonably intact gasket. That would be a no-no. As someone else posted, there could be some warping due to prior overheating. Also as someone else posted, it seems the next logical step is some disassembly and inspection to locate the problem which would seem to almost have to be associated with the heads due to the history given.

brisbane..bike shop who did head work said that because no weep hole leak doesnt mean the seals or bearings are ok.. they say to do waterpump. they talk about a 2 way seal, double seal . so just because its not leaking they could be no good. should i replace these seals ?????

You can - just take the clutch cover + water pump cover off and order up a new seals, gasket etc. and see what's going on under there.

As the water pump passes through the clutch cover it has to be taken off to access the mechanical seal.

WATER PUMP
MECHANICAL SEAL INSPECTION
Check the inspection hole for signs of coolant leakage.
If there is leakage, the mechanical seal is defective,
and it should be replaced (page 6-13).
See pages 106 - 110 (6-11 – 6-15) of the downloadable and searchable PDF Honda VTR service manual.

However you say there's no coolant leaking from the weep hole so hence why folk suspect the problem lies elsewhere in the head department.
