Hi guys. Im still having problems with my VTR

been off the road for months now.

Its running better than it was.

Now i go to pull away, it pulls away fine, but when at about 3k it drops to 1 cylinder. Just before i put the bike away for the past 3 month, thew bike was running till 3k, dropping onto 1 cyl, then after 7k rpm both cylinders would work and it would fly lol.

I changed, both cdis, swapped coils over (still same cylinder that was dropping out after swap), 2 brand new iridium plugs. Vaccum hose is on the right bit of tank.It ticks over lovely and sounds beautiful lol.
Both ht leads and caps changed.


Checked timing tonight and timing is fine.

Any other ideas of what it could be? Pulse generator?

I dont have the tps plugged in as i broke it when i took carbs out to clean. But ive been told it makes no diff and should definetly not make it run like this, in anycase it ran liek this before i even touched carbs.

Water in the fuel?

 

My money is on the timing.

 

Nah! Junk in the fuel.

 

Check for a hole or cut in the carb diaphragms. Sounds like one of your slides isn't lifting.

 

Flush your entire fuel system. Chas did this to his CBR and it was a bitch to clean up. Check your throttle cables. Make sure everything is rotating. Check for air leaks. If you still have the cough, sputter, die thing going on it is water in your fuel. It's that time of year. Make sure you are going through an adequate warming cycle before you romp on the bike. I don't move my bikes until I see the needle come off "cold". The tires are next. Let's be careful out there this time of year. Lots of guys go down to cold tires and comprimised road conditions.

 

This may be related or may not, but it is worth looking into. Check that the hoses that go to the tank are on correctly.

I once confused two lines, (I was in a hurry) and had somewhat similar results.

She would pull fine up until 3 or 4K then fall flat on her face, then pick up again at about 7 or 8K. Swapping the two hoses cured the problem. I never made that mistake again!

The thing is the bike had been riding fine for 3 month, then one day out of the blue, while i was riding it, this all happened.

Its deffo not water in the fuel as it was bone dry weather when all this started to happen.

Also the vaccum hose is on the horizontal pipe, which is right as it lets fuel out really good. But id never touched any of this once it started to happen. As i said it just happened one day.

Hmmm. You could be onto something here.

I tell you why.

When this all started to happen, i took airbox apart and one of those pesky triangle shape kinda things had came off ( as they usually do ) and was in the trumpet for the front carb, im pretty sure its the front cylinder thats causing all the aggro, so could this have caused damage to the carb etc?

the trianlge thing (secondary filter) won't cause any damage, don't ask me how I know, but that doesn't mean its not slides still check em.

 

Well if this rubber bit blocked the inlet and the carb was desperatly trying to suck air in would this not have damaged it?

Im at a loss here, there really isnt much else for me to check

I hadnt touched the bike at all guys. It just happened while riding

 

front or rear cylinder?

you said bike had sat.

pull your carbs inspect and clean

gunk somewhere is my guess

 

right guys, checked carbs again and the rear carb the needle circlip had fooked and the needle was still sitting in the hole not lifting when needed.

So i put it on middle notch with new circlip as theres no info.
the bikes running MUCH better.

But if kept at say 6 k rpm, the front cylinder kind of knocks, misfires. Put choke on and it runs ALOT better than without.

Im going to take it for a run tmoro and see what its like.

Also i didnt notice the needle before, so whether this is a new thing or its been the problem all along i dont know, but there deffinetly is something up with the front cylinder.

front cyl. sounds like it could be too lean.

sounds like there is a jet kit installed also.
try raising the needle in front carb also.
and check setting of mixture screws
usually about 2-1/2 turns out,correct guys?

 

Mixture screw setting depends on a couple of things: filter (stock or aftermarket), exhaust, and elevation. 2.25 turns works for me.

 

Check your plug wires and make sure one is not vibrating off as the RPM's rise. I had a similar problem and only after much anguish did I discover the front cylinder plug wire was not secure.

After using pliars to tighten up the connector I have not had any more issues.

Well............................

Fitted a second hand set of carbs with a good TPS. all connected up, ran rough, then fiddled with choke etc.

Heres a pic of it today




she runs just as before w00000p!

So excited, i took it to dealers as i needed 2 rear bulbs. hehe, Love it

Glad it's running, nice looking bike. I noticed that's a firestorm not a superhawk, same as mine but wrong color. Where are you located?

Passed mot, got it taxed, and insured. New front tyre on and she rides a dream.

Thinking of geting some 6 spoke rims now.
