Superhawk spark plugs for $10?
Why are we paying $10 each for the plugs?
I just took out the platinum ones which NGK doesn't make anymore and put a new set of Iridium ones. The bike runs the same. Perfect.
So why can't we just use a cheap copper core ones for $2?
Any plug will last 12k miles. My platinum's were pulled at 8k and they look like new. The bike is low tech so why a super expensive plug?

Because of the limited market for the plug. It is not used in many applications.
You can try to run a cheep plug to try and save a few pennies but I have never heard of anyone having any luck what so ever with running a different plug in this bike.
Also $10 is on the high side but be happy they were $13 - $15 back in the good old days....
Also just "looking" doesn't tell you much. You need to measure the plug gap. If it is larger than spec, then the plug is worn and needs to be replaced.

I checked the gap on the platinum ones = .35
The gap on the new iridium ones checked = .35
Electrode looks great.
Insulator great.
Ground strap brown with a slight white tinge.
Light carbon ring around base.
No deposits anywhere.
She's running pretty close to perfect- perhaps just a tad lean in this cold sea level air. I'll try the needles raised one click for Winter.
Meh...I wasted $20 when I didn't have to.

I however did not waste 25$. I found them at Cyclegear for 11.99 and hooted. The guy told me some newer bikes had plugs listing for 45$ a pop! I was too flabbergasted to ask wich bike.
My old plugs may have been original, gap was .040 and they were beat. Of course the bike runs way better, but now I think I feel the need for a carb balancing.

Here's what I paid at motorcycle superstore...$8.99
NGK DPR9EIX-9 - Iridium Spark Plug - Street Bike - Motorcycle Superstore
I got free shipping and no tax on my order since it was $90 with other stuff.
Edit: It's funny how the single plugs are $8.99 and the four pack is $38.99.
So you lose $3 if you order four?

Sorry to revive this thread, but does anyone know of a different plug to use? I've tried Auto Zone, Oreilleys, Napa, and a local cycle store with no luck. They all said they didn't have or know of any other plug that would work.

There really isn't any and even if there were I would still recommend running the OE plug

Perfect, thank you. I came out to start my hawk this morning and she will kick on at full choke but is very rough and dies with any throttle. I'm hoping its just plugs, I pulled the front wire and started it with the same behaviors so I'm pretty sure it is.
#19
I hope its only plug. It ran fine last night. Pulling the front wire made it a little worse but not much, which makes me think the plug is worn. The bike has 19k miles, I've had it for about 1k so I doubt they've ever been changed

Well a new set of plugs never hurts....
With that, the way to check these plugs is, pull it out..... kind of obvious.....lol
Take a round wire plug gap gauge of the proper size ( I would have to check the manual but it is in there) and check the plug gap.
If it has opened up, then the plug is worn out and needs to be replaced, no matter how good or bad it looks.

Um, my wife's sv took 2 plugs. One for each of 2 cylinders. Did they switch to a dual plug set up later in production?

Denso IX27B works fine, for me better than OEM NGK - smoother at low rpms. Costs around 10 dollars per each.

I couldn't get them anywhere and they would take too long to be shipped so the parts guy at the local cycle store gave me some that he said he was 99.9% sure would work. They are ngk but I forget what number. They seem to be ok. A little rough at idle and low rpms but they will do until the EIXs come in.
