sputtering around 4-5k rpm, any sugestions?
i just bought my superhawk about 1 week ago and im loving every minute of it until last night, i was driving and i pull up to a light and i let my engine idle and my bike dies......and after restarting it at about 4-5k rpm my engine seems to sputter, and i have no acceleration at all before my engine died. i went to the honda dealership today and asked how much a full tuneup would be, and even asked if they had an idea of what it might be. it is a used 1999 honda superhawk, and i was just wondering if maybe someone had the same issue as me and if they could help me before i have to go give the honda dealership some of my money....

Did it happen soon after refueling?
If you over fill them, the tank vent can fill with fuel and cause that.
Fix is open the fuel tank cap and break the tank vacuum.

either that or you are out of gas. remember they are gashogs. but even after the engine dies, you can get it going and baby it on fumes for about a mile. but its really bad for the fuel pump.

No fuel pump on a superhawk, gravity feed only; might be why they hydro-lock so easily.
If you fill the tank up too much which almost everyone does to get a liiiiiitle more range, the vent tube is blocked/stopped causing the petcock to pull a vacuum on the tank which eventually stops fuel flow. Engine sputters for a bit and then dies from lack of fuel to the carbs. Open tank for a couple of seconds/close, restart, and next time don't fill it up so high!

well it happened right after i gunned it alittle, then i pulled up to a stop light and it died, and every stop light right after that it wouldnt even idle without dying, but ill keep taking any advice that you guys give. i might have filled up a little too much so ill take the advice of opening the gas tank. thx

Is it a consistent sputter at 4-5k? Was it a one time only deal? If your bike keeps dying at a light remember that your idle should be set at 1200RPM.

I wonder if the previous owner(s) ever shimmed the needles up in your carbs. They run rough as hell below 3,000 rpm till you rich up the mixture. At least mine did. Hope this helps.
