she just quit
riding the hawk to work this morning and she just quits- no noise nothing mechanical - all electronics just went away- I did a quick roadside check of fuses, battery terminals and such. Couldnt find the problem. granted I have to look a little deeper when i get home tonight but does this sound familiar to anyone?

Check R/R, double check battery connections are tightened up, also main 30amp fuse - If not then could be that the bike's brain box died (IGN Module / CONVERTER UNIT)

Sounds like the converter box. MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE FROM THE RIGHT YEAR. THEY VARY AND ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

this is classic voltage regulator failure start there, its extremely rare cdi boxes or converters go out without something else frying them, so start with the r/r and the battery checks but the bike will continue running even with a bad battery but will not with a blown voltage regulator.

And when you check the battery voltage be sure and put a load on it. When mine died it drove me crazy trying to diagnose because the battery showed 12 volts. Simple thing is to turn the key on and then put the meter to it...

Ok - it's the 30 amp main fuse - (thanks lazn) that keeps blowin, even with the key off it blows the second the cap goes on the starter relay - relay checked out ok - so i pulled the lead off the starter and replaced the fuse again, this time it did not pop the fuse-reconnected starter- turned key on and off several times- bumped the starter -no problem - so I started it up and after 3- 5 seconds- pop goes the fuse. i am gonna check the r/r in the morning, and keep checking from there. dangit ,there goes the first nice saturday this year.

it does seem to be the season for the rr failure syndrome- I see there are too many threads to count regarding this issue- I ordered the Ricks replacement unit, it has the cooling fins and a bigger heat sink on it and it is supposed to plug right in with no rewiring needed. Anyone use this Ricks unit?

1) Original pre 2001 R/R
1.5) Non branded Chinese Finned R/R replacement (mine lasted 3 years)
5) Original Post 2001 R/R
5.5) Rick/Electrosport R/R
6) Yamaha/Suzuki non Mosfet R/R
10) Yamaha/Kawi/Gsxr Mosfet R/R (just swapped to this)
Numbers skipped to show quality difference. (Tweety could better number quantify the quality difference, but this is my guess)
