Rough Running Isues

Help

My '98 Hawk pops at idle, backfires through the carbs at steady low RPMs and tries to die at stoplights. I bought the Hawk with 31000 miles and no service records. It has fresh gas. I performed a bafflectomy last week other than that I think it is stock. Where should I start.

how long have you had it? was it stored recently and when was it last running great? If its new to you and you have no idea you could start with routine maintenance items including checking plugs, cables, carb synch and adjusting the fuel mixture settings if you are sure the carbs are clean.

Vacuum leak, probably an unseated carb.

The lazy approach to this problem is to spray wd-40 around the carb boots/manifolds. If the rpm fluctuates that means its sucking it in.

+1 on the vacuum leak, you can try a propane torch(unlit) it keeps the mess to a minimum.

Heres what I found so far. The spark plugs are NGK DR8ES-L. The air funnels (velocity stacks?) were reversed. Someone has been in there before and didn't use the right size phillips or was a muscle head on the screws. Tonight I will pull the carbs and see how they look. Thanks for the advice on the vacuum leak, I will check that when I put it back together.

Thanks,
Matt

Check the jets for cleanliness, set idle screws to 2.5 turns check the mains and pilot jets size, check if the needles are adjustable, if so use the 3 rd notch from the needle body, use a cover screw to pull the needle assembly off the slide.
Good luck

Those plugs are the wrong ones. Stock is NGK DPR9EIX-9. From dealer they are about $10 each. Probably half that if you order them from your local auto parts store and wait a day.

Last night I opened the carbs to see what the previous owner had screwed up in there . The jets were 178 front, 175 rear. Isn't that backwards? At least they were clean. Where does the vacuum line connect to the petcock, bottom or rear? I put it on the rear. I got it back together last night and started it. Sounded much better for the short time I let it run.

Yep these are stock jets but backwards, bigger jet goes to the rear. What mods you have on the bike, exhaust and air filter ??

The exhaust is stock with a bafflectomy. Stock air filter.

If you think that is bad you should see some of the other "repairs". Is there a comedy section of this forum for me to post the pics in?

Another thing I found was what appeared to be a synthetic cotton ball like material in the end of the front coolant line to the carb. I removed it before reassembly.

petcock vacuum

Make sure you put the vacuum line to the back of the petcock where the tube points to the left not the to the one pointing straight down, the one pointing down that was a 750 dollar lesson for me.

Smile

Wow! I thought it quick before.....now it screams. Just got the correct plugs, so they will go in this weekend. Now I can work on the other "repairs" that were made by the previous owner(s). I will post pictures of theses "repairs" in another thread.
