02-25-11 Yikes! help with rough running

I am having trouble.
The bike sometimes dies when I initially give it throttle.
It idles very low.
I noticed the airfilter is dirty.

well I bought it almost exactly a month ago. I have put 1900 miles on her since. I just bicycled to advanced auto parts and bought a KN cleaning kit. I really would like to know why there is a gas smell coming from beneath the fuel take. I am going to remove the airbox right now

How about we start with the basics, the choke has an adjustment nut behind the rubber glove just behind the ****... lift it, and tighten and it will stay in place...

Second, that filter is not a stock airfilter, it's a K&N... Do you have the matching caps and small filters for the carb ventilation? If not, consider a new OEM filter or start trying to "fix" your problems the hard way...

Before I'm willing to help you sort out a K&N filter, you really, really should go read up on it in old threads... Saves us having to repeat all the info... Others might have other opinions, that's their decision...

Well The caps are in place and the bike was running beautifully until yesterday. I have now stripped a screw trying to get access beneath the airbox... not sure what to do now. I was the last screw to remove.

Haha- been there before! I had my car on railroad ties and freggin' trying to take rusty brake calipers off in the Arizona summer heat.

Carbs could be leaking- either a gasket is bad, or the floats aren't seating properly. But I would follow Tweety's direction first and start sorting out filter, idle, choke, etc...

There are actually 4 more screws under that velocity stack. If you have a dremel, cut a "flat head" slot into it. If not, try using vice grips to grab the screw head. Or try to jam a flat head screw in there and twist pressing down on it- maybe even using a screwgun
.

Ah! dremmel. Brilliant! Yah that was the last screw on the velocity stack. then the brass looking screws beneath. Tweety I am looking over the service manual now on adjusting the choke, seems like I would have better access with the box off.

The choke adjustement have noting to do with disassembling the bike... Look at the choke ****... There is a rubber ring behind it, lift the edge of that and twist the knurled ring under it... It's basic... You don't even need tools...

And I'm asking again... Do you have the small filters that go on the float ventilation?

Again, basic... Either we start with the basic stuff, or you help yourself, as far as I'm concerned...

Whilst I am waiting for a dremmel to arrive. I decided to adjust the rear shock as I did the front shocks. the recommended setting is 3rd notch and .5 turns on the rebound. how exactly do I adjust the notches? I have this tool but it requires a ton of force. I am not really sure what you mean by two small filters? Where should I find them? I have two rubber caps but do not immediately see any filters. gonna go molest the choke now

As per Tweety's advice, adjust the rear shock by making a slight mod...

simple component swap: http://plasteak.com/osc/images/R-TR78278.jpg

In other words, don't worry about the rear shock right now. It's a whole other set of issues.

Stick a pipe on the handle to give yourself leverage, but again, that shock doesn't have much adjustment...

I did that to one of my screws I dread the day when I have to go back under there
And I don't even to have muscly arms to show why I stripped it

Like 7moore7 said, the rear shock is crap... But adjusting it is pretty easy even if it doesn't do much... You take that tool, stick on the extension that should be in the toolset along with it, a flat pipe that fit's on the end... And then you unweight the shock either by having a strong friend (or two) lift the rear, or by hanging the bike by the *** end from the rafters... And then just turn... A good tip, wear gloves as you will loose skin and blood otherwise...

The two small filters goes here... And since you are using a K&N then you put two top pieces on... The OEM filter has the top pieces molded into it... But the filters are tha same as OEM, so go get them at your local shop/dealer...

Those filter keep crap out of the carburators, without them you will screw up your carbs pretty shortly... Considering the current condition, it might be to late in terms of saving you work... End result, you probably should disassemble and clean the carbs completely...

But before you do that, go read... All the info needed for the job of cleaning your carbs is already posted... All the info for disassembling and re-assembling as well... Once you read, and have specific questions, we'll be around to answer those...

Another trick is to spray a bit of WD-40 around the adjustment collar before you try and turn it, it does help when they are stuck.

This is what it looks like in my airbox. If I am missing something important I will be speaking very strongly with the shop I bought the bike from.

Honestly it is feeling like my old bike did which did have a severe carb problem. It even used to shut off like in that video.

Item #10. You need 2 ea. and they are very important.
http://www.hondapartsline.com/fiche_...1998&fveh=4077

They go under those rubber blocks in the airbox. Though you would save yourself a lot of problems if you put a stock air filter back in there

wow ok. So those little parts should be in there as well? with the rubber caps on top? I dont have anything just the rubber caps. I will reassemble this beast and ride it down there right now. If I am. I really wanted to get the spark plugs out to check them. I bet they are fouled. The shop also said they did an oil change... however the oil filter looks very old.

This does not seem to indicate any filters just the block offs

That's because with the K&N you are supposed to re-use the OEM filters...

ahh. So what do the block offs do? if there are block offs wouldnt they prevent air from coming through at all? I am afraid I am very confused right now.

They block it off from the rest of the airbox, thereby making it a separate system with its own filters.

ok I understand now, I see that there is a air tube in the center which means it draws air from the holes on the side. wow those bastards essentially sold me a bike with no airfilter.... all hell is going to break loose now.
