rc51/vtr1000 (post '01) speedo Swap

Hey Fellas...quick question for you guys... I just bought a 98 SH, and I'm not really liking the stock speedo. I do, on the other hand, really like the speedo on the RC51 and the SH produced after '01.

How much of a pain in the *** would it be to swap out the speedo? Which would be the easiest to swap out?

Thanks in advance,
KG

The "new" SH speedo is a straight swap... All you need is the fuel sensor from the same years to have a working fuel gauge...

Oh, really, I always thought it was not a straight swap. Anyone else able to comment?

If you have some money to spend on a cool speedo....check out:

A bit pricey....but a lot better looking than the stock speedo.

...I've always been told you couldn't swap the old SH speedo with the post '01 speedo.

There are other post asking this same question or addressing the topic. I'm kind of lazy at the moment so I'm not going to do it.... but I'm pretty darn sure that it is not an easy swap from a pre-digital to a digital superhawk cluster.

Umm, no it's not. You would also need to change the wiring harness and all the electronics for the cluster to work. Why don't you like the stock unit?

I don't like it for the WORST possible reason... I... am a total FASHION *****... I like digital gauges...

Ok, that's the main reason... the other (more legit) reason is I feel that knowing how much fuel you have in your tank is (or can be) a safety issue.

Well... Ok, you might have to swap the connector... but the electronics needs no swapping or modification... The easy solution is to get the front wire harness as used and splice the wires... I was lasy and soldered the wires to the connector instead... ie I ripped apart the old harness and soldered to the new instrument, there by re-using the connectors...

The "pre-digital" as someone said speedo is just as digital as the other one... same pulses being processed by a curcuit in the speedo and shown either as a lcd readout or by a needle...

What I meant by "straight-swap" was that it has the same amount of wires, same colors and basicly you don't need a new harness or any work... a soldering iron and the circuit drawing in the service manual and you are set...
