low compression - next step?
low compression - next step?
morning all -
so the bike did fire up and was able to run on its own albeit sounding rough and horrible despite the carb rebuild, new plugs, oil, etc.
i decided to finally check the compression and found:
front at 115
rear at 125
i believe the manual said should be around 165?
could the timing be off?
already has CCTs from prior owner
Aside from checking the timing ...what should my next steps be?
Thanks

If you havent ran it since you got it timing would be your best bet imo. A bit intrusive since you need to pull the valve covers and the inspection port off the stator cover which can be a pain in its self but if the timing is good then you have the piece of mind knowing it’s not a tooth or two off.
How many miles are on the bike?
Just for fun I can do a compression test on mine and see what the numbers are. It has aprrox 30K miles on it to see how far off the numbers are if you want. I need to pull the carbs off anyway to figure out a fueling issue.
It's nothing expensive...tested it numerous times and got the same results.
Squid- thanks for sharing your readings!!!
How's she running??
I was worried the compression was expected in the >160 ...this is promising.
Now if I could just find the tech manual and a little time to check the timing

you can google search “VTR1000f shop manual” and you will find some PDFs that are free to download.
