Loud Random Clunk on 04 Hawk

Ive noticed a few times a loud clunk coming from what appears to be under my tank ...its a fast clunk that sounds like metal on metal. It happens randomly and today I noticed it when I gave a shot of gas....usually when the Hawk is cold......

Any Ideas Hawk gurus?

Def not anything like that....hard to describe and too rare to capture on video....it sounds like there is a little midget somewhere under my tank that whacks something metal and hollow really hard with a giant screwdriver.....yeah a midget with a screwdriver!!

Do you have the rubber grommets that go in the rear tank mount?

like hawkriders said backfires. Make sure your carbs are fully seated and there are no vacuum leaks. It is common for the carbs to break free of the manifolds. Vacuum leak=lean condition which then causes backfires.

I have the same problem under heavy load....popping/thumping noise, sounds like metal on metal. I'm also thinking lean condition.

You aren't getting detonation under load are you? (Not sure what you call it in the US, but pinging or pinking and pre-ignition are other terms used.)

I checked the tanks mounts and I dont think thats it....im not a mechanic by any means but if it is a backfire in the carb is there a chance when the backfire occurs it slams shut a valve or flap that would make a clanking sound?

Thanks for the help great site by the way...

Most likely the clunk is the carb(s) lifting and slamming the airbox into the bottom of the tank. It only takes on good backfire to dislodge the carbs. Have you checked them yet? Even unseated they may, and usually do, appear to be seated. Pull the airbox, take a close look, and move them around a bit.
