Klunk/ metal sound

So today I took the bike out for a short ride... when crusing at 3k-3.5k, i get a noticable metal klunkly sound, kind of a metal thud sound...

Any ideas on what it could be? The bike has stock CCT's in it at 20k, I have APE's going in Saturday... could that be the noise?

Any help would be great....

Never heard the sound of a failing CCT personaly but that seems to make sense....id quit riding the bike until you put the CCT's in just to be on the safe side and see if that resolves the problem

Trust me...That's not the CCT's... That sounds like gravel in a washing machine and once it starts it doesn't stop at any rev's until the bike is toast or repaired...

Doesn't mean it's a bad idea with a CCT change...

Noise like that can be many things... And not all logical... We have had people with a loose drive chain, carb backfire and many other things give that same description as you...

Find out more... The rpm's isn't info enough to figure it out...

UPDATE MORE DETAIL

So i had a good ride today in 35 degree weather.

More details on the noise/feeling....

when cruising in the 3 - 4K range I feel a pulse klanking noise from under the gas tank area. I can feel the bike stumble ever so slightly. I then roll on the throttle and it is fine during accleration, but when cruising it reappears.

Is this gas combusting in the carb? Any help would be great.

kinda sounds like it may be spitting back through the carbs.

any changes or mods?

when stock mine was barely rideable.
it would spit clunk and stall on me all the time.
i installed a dynojet kit and all that and the surging idle went away.

I have a similar sound, but mine happens when the bike is cold and it is coming from the front cylinder. It sounds like there is slack in the cam chain. Erring on the side of caution, I have decided to replace the CCT's. I would recommend doing the same, it is cheap insurance.

Good luck.

Carb sync. Easy to do, makes the bike smoother, and may get rid of your noise. I agree with the earlier poster, it sounds like backfire through the carbs.

Honda has Hawxter stated his bike would barely run with the backfiring of the carbs. Skoshere stated his problem happens at 3-4K rpms, so if it were the carbs the problem would cover a wider spectrum of issues not just in that specific rpm range.

I had this same problem a number of years ago. i suggest that you are missing one or both rubber cushions at the rear tank mount.
