You smelled gas when you filled it up? like when the gas cap was open?

sorry I couldn't help myself, your post isn't entirely clear....Are you smelling the strong gas fumes since you have been home and the bike is in your garage?

There are cases of the petcock diaphragms getting holes and leaking. Use the search function there are plenty of threads with petcock repair instructions. I think you can order a rebuild kit with some gaskets and the diaphragm.

Fill it a little below the little rim under your gas cap... that rim is kind of a venting area with a line running from it (for pressure changes in tank) It also acts as an overflow if you've topped it off too much. Especially if you do this with the bike upright and then don't ride very far and set it over on the side stand...

I'd go with that first. If it's still happening in a couple of days it could also be the petcock leaking.... if this is the case usually you can see/smell it coming fairly strong from that area of the tank. Just lift it up and stick a flashlight in there and poke around a little bit.

I do not believe I'm alone with this problem, but I need to check with you guys if you have a solution before I go crazy. My garage smells of gas continuously. This whether the tank is full, half full or empty.

I have checked many things over time to see where the smell comes from.
Gas cap, petcock, hoses have all been checked. I have also ripped through the carbs last winter doing Hawks carb set up. I see no leak anywhere or
on anything.

If anyone has other suggestions or thougts on the subject, please comment.

You could have a bad or sticking float valve and dumping into a cylinder.

Has you MPG dropped lately or maybe fluctuates from time to time?

And for the OP check the drain nipple on the bottom of the petcock to see if fuel is dripping out of it

Ok, well 7 took care of his smell by not going to Taco bells anymore, I still have mine unfortunately. After many tests, finally figured out it's my pet **** that smells like hell, yet, it doesn't leak.

So to remedy the problem, I will replace the diaphragm kit in it, but was curious to see if anyone has ever run into this problem with the pet **** not leaking, but, smelling of gas where the stink is almost unbearable ?

Oh, by the way 7, how can you stomach that stuff

it might be time for new hose clamps on the petcock. Fumes may be getting past where fluid cant

Anyone know where I can get the kit on the east coast ? I'd have it shipped in FL, since I can have it picked up in about a week from now.

My reason for asking is they want an arm and a leg up here for one.

Avoid the aftermarket rebuild kits... those have a hit or miss success rate in all of the diaphrams fitting. Best thing is to order the Honda petcock kit, which just replaces the whole diaphragm assembly>

Honda part- 16953-ML0-034. It's used on a few Honda bikes so isn't super rare.

Thanks Ian for the part number, and thanks to Insulin for the link. However, found a place close to my house that will order it for me for
21,95$, so, much less than what I had been quoted previously.

Also, much less then in the US....

So, I changed the kit on the pet ****....only to keep having gas fumes stick my garage again. So, removed the tank....AGAIN, and started playing with the on/off dial. Noticed gas was leaking whether or not it was closed, so, found my culprit.
I had a pretty new pet **** lie around in my stuff, and changed the whole unit on the tank. Took care of my problem for good. Doesn't smell of roses in the garage, which suits me fine, but at least my girlfriend will stop complaining I smell of gas when I get back into the house.

Red face

If your worried about your GF complaining about the gas smell now just wait 10 years after your married, oh baby!

On your way home from the titty bar or your GF apt stop and top off your fuel tank, then apply just a drop of gas behind each ear and your wife won't smell the dancers or your GF's perfume when you crawl into bed at 2 in the morning...

It's a great way to avoid a late night fight and alimony payments later!
