Hard Shift into 2nd

My 98 SH sometimes has a hard shift into from 1st to 2nd gear. If I lay on the throttle hard in 1st in is hard to get into 2nd (wants to shift into neutral). I am going to change the clutch fluid today but if that doesn't do the job, any suggestions as to what to do next?

I have the factory pro shift kit in my SH and it did help the 1-2 shift. I have the cheaper $80 version not the evo shift star, just a rod with a ball bearing roller and a spring.

I think this is a very common problem on the superhawks. I noticed the difficulty of shifting into 2nd the first day I rode it (the bike was nearly brand new). Try to find the sweet spot and shift at the right RPM.

Change the oil to something good (if not already done) and short shift the 1-2 gear change. It shifts smoother at lower rpm. After that shift higher if you like.

Pre-loading the shifter helps a lot.

Don't put up with it, do the mods. That is my opinion.

The Factory Pro kit is worth a fair bit, but it is a very significant upgrade to the quality of the OEM components.

Moving your linkage to change the shift throw is free and easy to do.

The heim joint mod is my own as far as I know, and works well. Not sure how many other people have done it since I mentioned it, but I think there have been a couple. Isn't too hard to do, and the parts are cheap enough. Don't underestimate the effect that quality, well lubricated joints, will have on the shift.

+1, I had shifting issues that I thought were gearbox issues. I changed oil to a known "good" shifting oil, did the heim mod and the spline mod, shifts better now. Still doesn't enjoy shifting into 2nd when you're Really into it, but it's not as bad now.
