Fuel in air box... my first hawk

Hey guys,

I just bought a 1998 VTR1000 SH. The gentlemen I purchased it from said it had been stored for about two years. It has 5,553 miles on it.

Anyway I got it to start but it runs like crap.. backfiring.. dying the normal crappy running situation.

I removed the tank and am draining the tank and adding new fuel.

My biggest questions is there was about 8oz of gas under the airfilter. Is this a regular issue with these bikes? What can I do to remedy the problem?

Thanks for your help. Oh yeah I searched but nothing was to specific to my issue.

there should not be any gas in the airbox, and for that to happen I think there are worse consequences that you need to check before running again. I would not start it until the oil has been checked to make sure that it has not been contaminated with gasoline.

Next the carb float needles are the most likely culprit, there are alot of choices on how to fix this. You can remove the carbs and clean them yourself very carefully or you can run seafoam in your gas for a few tanks. Before you do the seafoam though make sure that the oil is not contaminated as it requires you to run the bike.

Next step if the seafoam still doesn't fix it it to check that the petcock diaphragm is stopping the gas when the bike is stopped and that it is not letting fuel return through the small vacuum hose on the back.

Well I would start by pulling you carbs off and cleaning them out, used compressed air and carb cleaner and spend plenty of time inspecting the action of the float bowl, spraying out all the jets to make sure you've cleaned all the gummed fuel and varnish out, and also spraying through all the passageways inside the carb to make sure they're not clogged. I'd flush the tank too before putting everything back on and adding new gas. I can't quite remember the specifics of these carbs but you have a super rich condition and fuel is being pulsed up into your airbox. Cleaning you carbs or having someone do it will most likely fix your problem. My SH needed this done after sitting for only 7 months, so I'm sure yours needs it.

Slowly, slowly the reasonable responses to the OP draw him into the site until too late he realized that he was becoming grist for the humor mill.

Stuck float valve. Happened to me last year. Filled the airbox, the cylinders, and diluted the crankcase oil. Here's my thread: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ghlight=gasoil

CHECK THE OIL FOR THE SMELL OF GAS BEFORE you run the motor!!!

A couple of squirts of motor oil down the spark plug holes might be a good idea before starting as well. It could prevent scoring the cylinders if gas washed all the oil off the walls.

just an update. I had the carbs cleaned, stage 1 installed new float needles. and a few new screws and such.

after all was installed today the bike started up and ran ok smoked white from the tail pipe. Oh yeah I changed the oil. after shutting the bike of fuel continued to come out of the center brass port on each carb. We checked the floats and they were operational.

Our thinking is the Petcock need rebuilding. Any info you guys have would be awsome.

Thanks in advance

The petcock repair kits are cheap enough that I would advise just doing it. If it fixes the problem, great, if not chances are good you'd replace it down the road anyhow. I picked one up on eBay for $27 shipped about a month ago.
