If you do a search you will find that there is a few opinions about this subject. It largely depends on your riding style and whether the springs are std or modified.
It might pay if you downloaded the manual as well, as the answers for your questions about std settings are there too.

Hope you're not paying the guy, and why would you take you bike to someone to have work done without doing your home work first. Sounds like **** poor planning to me.

Homework first, tinker later... Sounds like my mom...

But I agree... It keeps from ending up in ditches...

According to the manual, the recommended fork oil for unmodified forks is Pro-Honda suspension fluid SS-8.

If your springs are still OEM then the preload adjustment does very little. The OEM springs are compound springs, preload or any possible shimming will just result in compressing the low rate section.
The collected wisdom of this forum says that replacing the springs with a heavier linear rate model is the way to go. I gave my forks to Greg (Hawkrider) to rebuild. Heavier rate springs was one of several things he did. Only had it done last week so I havn't ridden much, but so far it feels great

Good to hear. Thanks for the info. Hopefully we can find a heavier springs locally for a good price.
