Engine noise

Seeking suggestions on what might be causing an engine noise.

I purchased a 1997 VTR1000F less than 2 months ago. It has done around 40,000km.

A few days after purchasing the bike, I became aware of a very occasional and very faint knock in the engine. It was so faint that, at first, I wondered if I was just imagining things.

Over the past few weeks, however, the faint knock has turned into quite a noticeable rattle at times. It happens most when opening the throttle at lower revs.

In case it's relevant, a few weeks ago, I did an engine oil change and put in a fully synthetic 15W50 oil. The worsening in noise occurred after that but that may be just coincidental.

The other thing I'm concerned about is that I've heard that the cam chain tensioners are prone to failure on the early VTR1000's. Does anyone have experience with that - ie, do they start to rattle beforehand?

I don't want to dive in and start pulling things apart without having some idea of what the cause might be. Therefore, any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Welcome to the forum taras!
Without hearing the noise first-hand... I'd say cam chain tensioners.

sounds more like the carb slides to me as the cct's should make more noise as the rev's get higher.

It's the carb slides. Big twins and CV carbs - that's the way it is.
