ECU differences?

Hey guys. I'm going to pick up an ECU for my 98 to fix my tach and hopefully the lopey idle as well. I'm browsing eBay and the one I had an eye on is now gone. I'm finding some from later year bikes though.

My question is this. Aside from ignition mapping is there anything else a newer ECU gives (like if I wanted to upgrade to a newer gauge would I need the newer ECU?) And is it plug and play?

Not plug and play if Im remembering correctly, I think its a different plug or different pinout on the plug...

Yea I was just looking at them on eBay and the later ones have make pins while the earlier ones have male pins but they're sunk into the ECU instead of sticking out of it.
