cct and tensioner problem

Hi all, had a problem today while putting on new ape tensioners. Started on the back cylinder and everything went fine as for adjusting. Got everything tdc and what not, like I said no problems. Moved to the front and got the head off. There was tension on the cam chain so moved the chain around a small turn and it jumped...now I know the timing is off so whatever I dont care and kept turning a small amount more and same thing happens. I try the other way and same thing. I tryed with the cct in and out, tension and no tension on the chain and was never able to get slack in the chain and or keep it from not jumping. Any suggestions on what could be the problem? thanks...

Did you rotate it inbetween having the rear at TDC and opening the lid on the front? When the rear is at TDC without tension the front has tension and vice versa...

you weren't supposed to loosen the front CCT till after you had the rear one done and had already rotated the engine to TDC compression..

Now you have to retime the valves as if you had removed the cams.

Service manual is here: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=11365

Section 8-20 has the cam install procedure. (not a direct walkthru of your problem, but hopefully will help)

thanks for the feedback. We did move it to tdc before pulling the cct.

TDC compression for the front cylinder right? (there are 4 TDC points on the bike)

Ok... Lets try to clear up the confusion a bit...

You where supposed to do this:

Go to the TDC for rear cylinder where there is no tension on rear cam chain...

Swap rear CCT out and button it back up...

Rotate the engine until the TDC where there is tension on rear cylinder and not on front...

Open up and check/swap front CCT...

Did you do ALL these steps? From what you have described I suspect, and I believe lazn do so to, that you skipped rotating from one TDC to the other... Because if you do, leaving the engine like it was when doing the rear, it does indeed have tension at the front... And doing the front then will have the result that you described...

Either the chain came off partially or totally (not sure if it's possible tough) from the front sprocket. It's also possible that the chain is stretched so much that the tensioner can't compensate it, maybe the root cause that pushed you to change the CCT, Noise ?? In that case the engine will turn over smoothly by hand and the cam should follow without blocking. In that case, you need a stator cover gasket, a flywheel puller, new chain, why not crank sprocket and a case of beer.
But first make sure everything is fine, ask someone else to double check your work, sometimes a second pair of eyes can see what you missed.
Good luck

SPRHK is an unknown quantity at this point
FYI, if you were at TDC and there was pressure on CCT, you were most likely 360 deg. off the mark. You would have to do another rotation of the crank, brought it up to TDC on the front cyl again and you would have been fine. You should have been able to tell with the VC off by the position of the cam lobes. If either valve is being held open, you are 360 deg. out.

notice the in and ex lobes are pointed away from the valves - that is where you want them. See th zip ties as well.

Either way, now that the timing has slipped, you need to relieve the tension off the chain. (remove cct) and then correct the timing. (you will need to see where the rear cyl is timed to so that you know where to set the front, so remove that valve cover again)

so it would seem that I rotated it but not enough to get the slack off...plain and simple...I will see what I can do with the timing...now for that case of beer...thanks to everyone

You can do it, it shouldn't be that hard. What part of the world are you in?
