Carb Heater
Has anyone ever bypassed the carb heater? Capping off the ports on the carbs and joining the two main lines together.
I have done it on cars here in FL, doesnt get cold enough to need to heat the carbs and we wanted the air charge to be as cool as possible coming into the TB/Carbs.
There have been debates about needing the fuel to be at a certain temp to atomize when being introduced into the cylinder. But with the radiant heat fron the engine I would think that would be enough.
I also ask this cause with the lean surge issue I am having I noticed it got worse and the bike got hot. So why have 190*/200* coolant running thru the carbs if its not needed.
Any thoughts?????

8541Hawk has adamantly advised against this. The thermostat bypasses those lines once it has heated/opened up;

Thanks 7. Jumped the gun a little with my thread. Just got done reading 8541's thread on the system.
Hey off subject (kinda) you get a chance to read anymore on my other thread about my lean issue? Just wondering.
Thanks!!

Heaters
Also, a surge that increases as engine gets hotter is not a lean issue but a rich issue.

Didn't even think of that... and those things are on there TIGHT!

I removed them recently and notice no diff in performance. I did notice that I didn't have to reconnect them when reinstalling the carbs and that was worth it alone, notwithstanding never having to fool with them again. You are about 100 miles east of here and if your carbs ever freeze up I will walk to Melbourne and admit an error.

Well since having the SH back together and testing out my carb setting and capping off the heater lines I havent noticed and thing bad by doing so. Bike is running good and I just need to make a small adjustment to my settings and I think I will be good. And as was said a few posts ago, I wont have to mess with those lines and getting them back on or off.

Well like I always say, if you think there is no difference, try hooking them back up and then see what you think.....
I tried it in '98 and on my bike I thought it made no difference until I hooked them back up.... and I could feel the difference on the first ride.
So IMHO you should leave them hooked up

Yes I am. On my bike it was "crisper" and took the throttle better with the line hooked up.
The best example I can give is that running without them was kind of like not having the TPS hooked up (though not as noticeable) in that the bike ran fine but was just a bit flat.
That is why I said to hook them back up, after running without them for a while and see if you can feel any difference. On mine I could but maybe others might not.
