900rr fork height

I have a set of CBR 900rr front forks on my '98 Hawk, can any tell me how much I can raise them in the triples before there is an issue. Is 10 mm still okay ? I think there the shortest of the fork mods, so I would think there is a limit. thanks

This thread might provide some insight: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ht=ride+height

You should try to get some baseline data from those who also have the 900RR fork swap.

RCVTR is an unknown quantity at this point
When I was researching fork swaps, I learned that the 900RR forks required longer stanchions to make them fit a VTR. They were a special order part.

That's when I started measuring RC51 forks.

I'm not sure you can raise the 900RR forks enough to get the proper font end height.

I am running them flush and they work fine. Granted I have not run a track day with it or really pushed it hard but no ground clearance problems so far.

I think they are even shorter than the never model CBR forks? If so pushing them up at all might not be a good idea in terms of ground clearence...

Thanks all for the replies. I just got in from a trackday at Infineon(it is stills Sears Point to most). I had raised the forks 10mm since the last trackday because it turned in really slow. seems to have helped considerably. Someone here (sorry but I forgot who) had suggested 4/5 mm in the rear so that may be my next move, but for now it is much improved. My hawk is a track only bike and came set up by po who never tracked it but a few times. It would be great to get the proper geometry to work with. there is an Ohlins rear I just got back from a respring/rebuild by Ohlins. The Heli bars also seem to be a little to close together, but moving them out, they hit the instrament cluster . I will look at the link tommorrow, I poured through the archives here and did not have much luck, I know answers are in here somewhere, for now it's to bed, I am beat.

I've got 900RR forks also....same issue with my Heli bars...forks up through the trees not quite 10mm here...I've been considering the rear shim mod for some time now and was going to do around 8mm (10mm too much?) and bring the forks back closer to flush with the trees...but now I have a 120/65 on the front and it sped up the steering a bit so I plan on leaving it 'as is' for a while (since I don't have the proper stand set-up to mess with the rear shock anyway).

Well 10mm is waay to much... then you will probably hit the header on the shock... not an exact equivalence but 1mm back = 2mm front or there abouts... so a 5mm shim should be close to the same as the setup you have upfront now...

I am running 8mm in the rear and it's all good (mind you I am running a 2-1 exhaust so there is no longer a header running under the shock but it's the same set-up I ran with the 2-2 exhaust).

I just finished reading the ride height link and find it a little confusing for me as I am still learning how to understand suspension set-up. Since my hawk was already done, the only thing I am most certain of is they are CBR 900 forks. I don't have a clue about what triples were used, is there more than one choice ? I have tried to find part numbers on the calipers, no luck, they are nissin and gold in color, they work very well. I love this bike, after my day at the track, I felt like I just returned from a 5 day vacation..
I think I will leave the front forks at 10 mm raised and add 4/6 mm to the rear at least until I find someone who has other set-up info. How much higher will this raise the seat height ? I will be installing the FP 4 degree, and a jet kit, but need to find out the right one.

thanks for all the help,

If your triples look like this (see pic), then they are probably 900RR triples. Up to year 1997 (changed in 1998). I've never heard of other triples being used in the mod, but there are other bikes with 45mm fork legs (cbr600rr with conventional forks for example). I did my fork mod a number of years ago, so sorry I can't help out much with details.

With the forks raised do you still need it to be quicker steering? There is obviously a point where it becomes a bit nervous in character... And as said before, the difference with 1 mm is greater in the rear than front... Raising the forks reduces ground clearance, so the optimum would be to raise the rear and be able to gain back clearance by dropping the forks down again...

It all depends on how it feels... Setting the bike up one way because of our advice might not be right for you... Try it, play around with the settings...

Yep, that is the same as far as I can see, thanks, answers that. Did you use stock calipers from your Hawk or did the 900rr calipers swap also ?

Tweety,
You are right, since I raised them 10 mm, bike is much better, although a very fast friend did managed to drag the rear sets, there Harris adjustable rear sets, I think it was because the PO has them set low, he was 6' 5" tall and probably needed the leg room. For now, I will leave it at 10mm .

I just did the forks and triples (and switched to tapered roller bearings). Besides the bars, all the other stock pieces bolted right on without any mods needed. There are plenty of brake upgrades available for not too much $$$ from what I have read on the forum. I haven't upgraded...yet. If you do a quick search on this site you'll know exactly what to look for on ebay. From advice given on the forum, it seems like almost any mc/caliper combo off a CBR of any capacity is an improvement over the stock SuperHawk's brakes.

'Cept the radial calipers aren't a bolt on from the CBR1000.

True, but then we'd need to change the name of the thread.
