2003 Superhawk Throttle Body issue

I just purchased a 2003 Superhawk with 7K miles from someone who told me he had it for two years and never ran it. So, when I bought it from him, I had it completely worked up - carbs rebuilt, fluids changed, chains tightened, yadda, yadda, yadda, and the guy tells me that the throttle body on one of the carbs is bad and he applied a temporary fix to it which was to cover two intake holes with silicone until I decide what I'm going to do. It turns and runs, but pops every now and again and shuts off.

Does anyone have any advice as to what my options are? Perhaps buy a non-OEM performance carb (assuming they are out there) and replace the one or a place that can repair it (assuming it can). Any advice would be appreciated. Would love to get this bike to its full potential. Thanks.

Rebuild the carbs properly

Lots of info here as to how

Restoring the hor water heating circuit is tough but worth it if you live in cool climes.

Stay with the oe carbs and air filter and go up a size or so on the mains, maybe the pilot to 48 or not, and shim the needles .020" or so, go 2.5 turns on the pilot screws, set the TPS at 500 ohms, sync them close, change the gas with Techron, fresh plugs and battery, check the choke circuit and fire it up!

Easy peasy!

Is it possible a carb diaphragm is torn? Throttle body's are something fuel injected motors have.

Not to hijack this thread, but I seem to recall once seeing a comment in a thread here where a forum member was recommended to send your carbs to for refurbishment.
Ring a bell for anyone?

There is a guy in west Texas that I sent carbs from a '82 Honda Nighthawk for a refresh. The carbs came back looking new. Not an exaggeration.
Don't know if he offers rebuild on the carbs for the SH.

Took carbs to a carb shop

Had a shop look at the carbs and he rebuilt the rebuilt carbs and saw the diaphragms are setup incorrectly. He did a thorough cleaning and rebuilt the diaphragms. Going to install them tomorrow and see how it goes. Looking forward to the challenge. Thank you all.

I noticed the peacock has a center plug but the service manual doesn't have any hose connected to it. Is it just a breather?

Hoses, a new form of torture

I have the manual but can't figure out what hose goes where. For example, can't find this black device in the manual, but there are supposed to be hoses connected to it. If someone has a easy to understand schematic of the hose connections, i would appreciate it. I have tried on my own, but I have to reach out now. Thanks.

The center piece is one of the connections I can't find what attaches to it.

Also, it's not a California bike. Was bought from someone in Washington state.

Anyone in the Los Angeles area who can assist with removing smog equipment

I'm going to remove all the CA smog stuff today and thought it would be great if there was someone local who has done this and maybe if I hit a snag I can take the bike over and they can show me what I'm going wrong. I'm in downtown LA area. Thanks.

How do you rebuild a carb diaphragm?

I may be dating myself but that's the $64000 question

Replace

Maybe get unfolded so it'll lay in the O-ring groove

I sometimes use blue tape or even electrical tape to get it to lay in the groove and slip it out as the cap goes on

But once it's got a hole in it forget it

That’s where I was going. There is no rebuild. It’s either good or it’s not. If there’s a hole, replacements are not cheap.
