F'n Arai

Anyone familiar with Arai's face shield system knows how weird and not so simple they are. Well broke the side pod today. Just trying to change shields when the pod took flight. Little, and I mean little plastic tab broke off while inserting the shield.
I've had the helmet a few years now and every time going on of off with the shield it feels like something is going to snap. Today it did. SH**T!

Been there, done that, had to buy a pair of expensive replacement pods. And I do use silicone lube (on my helmets as well).

8541Hawk will become famous soon enough
Another thing that can cause issues with Arai is spraying cleaner directly on the face shield.
It can pool inside the side pods and attack the plastic bits.
Always spray the cleaner on a cloth and then wipe the shield down.

I think you're quite right about cleaners making the plastic parts brittle Hawk; I managed to break the little locking tab on the visor early in my Arai ownership, and I put that down to leaving spray cleaner on the helmet. I now use a water-soaked paper towel for a few minutes to soften all the bug guts.

New pods arrived yesterday. Put them on this morning. Had a hell of a time. While installing the visor the right pod (same side as before) flew off. I was sure I broke it. To my surprise it wasn't. Try again, same thing. Now I’m thinking that the base is damaged. One more try. Put the pod on and it seats, only better than before. Then I struggle to get the visor to go on. S**T.
Maybe I should rethink this riding motorcycle thing.

I have some old Arai Quantums. Never had any trouble with the toolless shield system on those. Any idea if the system on yours is still the same, or have they improved it nowadays?

I have thought of that, Finding a retailer that has brands that I would consider, and more important will fit is a problem. I need a long oval shape lid. Not many brands make that shape. As an example the local moto shop, still 30mi. away, only carries the low end of Scorpion helmets. Bottom line is I have to try something on before I shell out $$$

The very newest Arai X series helmets have an improved system. Looks to be much easier. Watch that video above.
