Time for Stage I

Carbs on!
Thanks Bill!
With any luck I'll have time to get the rads hung and fluids in tonight...then I'll have to find something else to delay the startup

It doesn't seem to be the linkage cuz no matter how I orient it I cant get it to shift.
It seems to be in 3rd gear cuz it's hard to get rolling but once Rollin the tranny seems fine so I'm thinking it's the shift star.
Is there any special procedure to install the star that I could have missed?

I was able to knock it into a false neutral then back to third, but it seems like there's a return spring in there that's not working or something cuz it feels like the star moves and it wants to shift when I pull up on the shifter but has no stsr movement feeling going down. Feels like it's hitting something going down stopping it before you can feel the star move
It would be nice if I could fix the linkage w/o having to drain the fluids and pull the clutch cover
help!

what a great feeling eh? to think it actually starts! I'm the sure the not shifting is a bit of a worry though. you probably just flipped around one of the dog bones. Why not just remove the engine and get down to the cases and gearbox real quick and check! haha. Hopefully its something simple as you think. I don't recall the shift star install procedure, but hopefully one of the others will chime in or review the instruction carefully to be sure you had it oriented. were you able to shift it during the install of the mechanism while rotating crank and all worked well before putting the engine in?.

Tranny/shift issue found
Not sure why but the shift star failed and got cockeyed causing the follower to bid up = no shifts!
put new star in and shifts like a champ through all 6 gears

Ordered a new 25mm lock nut for the clutch assembly today from Ron Ayers along with some cowl bolts that vibrated off during the 1st ride...hope that's all I lost
I should have her back together by the end of the week then it'll be time for some more bedding of the bearings & rings then a dyno run to see how bad the jetting is and what kinda power she can make...
Can anybody recommend a carb sync guage?

I've seen digital tools out there too. Are they any good?

bonded the oil pan back on last night and reinstalled the clutch & cover filled with M1 15w-50 and topped off the coolant...fired up on second try and idles at 1200 rpm. Tried to set idle as low as possible, but it's not easy to roll over those Morwi STG1 cams
Got a little clutch chatter/noise when I disengage it in neutral that I hope will go away.
rode it around the neighborhood last night but didn't get to run it past 3rd cuz it was rainy and still rainy today so I didn't ride it to work, but 1st impression is 2nd gear is fingertips only at 5k and up

1st Ride Impressions - STG1 Build
Well, despite the 50% chance of rain this afternoon, I rode the SH to work this morning and my normal 45 mile commute to work quickly became a test to try to stay within the posted speed limits!
The RPMs spin up fast prolly due to the lightweight flywheel and it makes good power from WAY down low all the way up. At 7K RPMs in 3rd gear the front end wants to come up and it's scary fast compared to the stock motor. The sound with the top off the air box is like a hot rod. Punch it and you hear it right away and the exhaust note has a much bigger hit and louder in all gears.
The jetting is fine down low, but it stumbles at the top around 7K & 8K RPMs which is prolly due to the large mains (195 & 200), but I'll try to sort that out after the dyno run.
I want to say a big THANKS to everybody here who help me with this build & Roger Ditchfield from across the pond. I couldn't have done it w/o you guys!
Now, is it time to ride home yet?

I think I can relate to that... Yeah, a lighter flywheel makes the bike a bit peppier... Keeping the front down isn't always easy...
I'm not running pistons in my bike, but probably more spot on in jetting... And the full on engine with pistons are almost assembled... Just need to tear them down and swap over a few parts so I have a stock one and a full Stage 1 engine...
Congrats on the result... You are running the battery right?
