Take on VFR tank mod from different angle

OK, I am looking for advice from engine jetting/airing/balancing etc. etc. gurus.
I have got VFR tank that I would love to put on my VTR (thanks to greatest innovator on this forum ).
But I do not like idea to make so much bumping on underneath of tank.
Hence the question: main problem is a cover of airfilter, isn't it? Please correct me if I am wrong. Now, what if I would remove top cover of airbox... Will I be able to achieve original balance or because of upsetting resonance in system I will never be able to balance it out or it will start eating fuel even more because I will have to increase jetting to get mixture right?
What do you think?

Yup, I wondered the same thing upon my first test fit.

I thought that a k&n or some such filter designed to get wet might work but I didn't pursue it because a) of the possible jetting/rideability isssues and b) it would just be too easy!

Maybe only cut off the rear section and leave the front/snorkel intact along with a non-paper filter element?

What about Pod filters? My old bike didn't have an airbox and I didn't even know what one was until I bought the hawk.

yep, both variants seem to be possible...but I will need to spend some time on it...winter then.
Sporty V-twins are notoriusly difficult when it comes to getting mixture right....
And I'll have to buy second hand airbox somewhere to experiment
OK...thanks guys, that's good ideas.

To Superbling: looks like I was first to snap myself a VFR tank cheaply off eBay! I so love idea of long-range VTR!!!

v-twins need a pressurized air box.

That is how the engine is configured. That is why the intake plentums are of different lenghts.

that's why I am a bit stuck....I can pressurise airbox, but then I'll have to make it smaller and do something with filter - I can actually take off top of airbox and close it with flat panel, but where to put filter then

Re: Take on VFR tank mod from different angle

I would keep the airbox as it is.

Hundreds of hours have been spent on forming the airbox and getting correct flow with a minium of dead spots. (I helped with a airbox for a new engine and so much time was spent in FNA and thermo analysis that it would make your head spin).

Dont second guess the engineering and the colaborative effort of the design team.

Find another option, see who makes a larger capasity tank, or one that mounts differnetly. Look at another twins tank see if that would work (TL1000 SV1000 Millie R etc).

Just thought I would throw that suggestion out there.

V-twins don't need a pressurised airbox. In fact, if you look at the mods done to the racing twins such as the Mille and Ducati 9xx bikes, they work with open airbox mods. Have a look at both the evoluzione and renegade kits for this as both work on removing the airbox completely and going with hi-flow filters and a light seal on the bottom of the tank, but not airtight.

The VFR tank mod sounds like a very interesting idea. For my streetfighter I was going to custom fabricate a carbon tank using the stock tank as the basic outline (bought a dinged up one off ebay for $20). Maybe I'll look into making one from a VFR tank instead and just tweaking the shape a bit to fit around the airbox.

Re: Take on VFR tank mod from different angle

My view....thogh I've not tried this mod.

Remove stock top.....
Get a thick piece of foam rubber......
Cut it to a ring the shape of lower air box.....
RTV foam to filter with trimmed off divider.....
Adhear snorkel to foam.......
Install filter and attached foam ring.....
Install tank....
The bottom of your tank is your new cover

Will it work?

Re: Take on VFR tank mod from different angle

Wrote email to Renegade....their kits look exactly like what I had in mind, but of course all for injected bikes...
Let's see if I'll get any answer - I did not actually asked them for kit, just asked if there is anything for Superhawk, any plans, any advice etc.

Check it out on Renegade website:

Re: Take on VFR tank mod from different angle

I am impressed - already got answer from Renegade - great to see somebody cares for fellow riders so much!

Unfortunately answer confirms worst:

"Ihor, we did some test on the VTR , but the outcome was not very
positive.

Best Regards
Jorge"

I'll stick to tank thumping then....
