Removing PAIR will I need to........

adjust the carbs at all? I have read that the valves add air to the exhaust to help emissions. I am not sure so I am going to ask the question.

Beside the weight saving, is it really worth removing the PAIR?

Just disabling it will make most happy. If you rejet then you may as well remove it while you're there.

One other question about the plugging of hoses and hardware. What exactly needs to be plugged if I am removing the PAIR cover and reed assembly? I have read the forums and Greg's site, but there still seems to be some confusion on my end as to what I cap.

Again, thanks to all that have responded.

sorry to jump in on this thread. I got the moto bits block off plates to do this. I need to take of the PAIR covers. turn the reed over and reinstall then put the new mot bits covers on then pull the lines to the pair valve and plug the holes (1) in the air box (1) at the other end of the small line. What if I do not turn the reeds over could I remove them completely since I am using the block off plates?

HondaJohn:

To answer your question and since I just finished removing the entire PAIR system, you do not need to put the reeds back in if you are using the block off plates. Just make sure that you use a RTV gasket sealant around the edges of the plate to insure you get no air leaking under the plates.

I got a package of rubber end caps at Auto Zone and some clamps, which are next to the caps, cost me a total of $6. Use the 5/8" cap to close off the PAIR hose that goes into the bottom of the air box. The second cap goes on the small hose that comes off the PAIR vacuum assembly, attached and under the air box, and goes into the front carb. I cut the hose closer to the carb and stuck a screw into and then slid one of the 3/8" rubber caps over that and then used one of the clips to secure it.

Once you do this you can remove the two hoses running from each PAIR and unscrew the vacuum assembly from underneath the air box.

My bike runs better and does not pop when decelerating. Also, why you have it disassembled you might think about replacing the spark plugs and air filter.

Good Luck!

I just got a '99 VFR, and have it apart to clean the carbs. I would like to remove the PAIR valve as well. I see from the above where to block the hoses, but is that it? Can someone please provide a link to the "best" site for a step-by-step removal?

I am curious if the lines and white plastic "container" INSIDE my airbox are part of this system that can be removed? What is this white plastic thing?

Thanks!!!

Doc:

Do not remove anything inside the air box. Look at Hawkrider post in this thread, it is #8, there is a diagram show what needs to be plugged.

Thanks. I was just wondering what that thing in the airbox is used for. I have owned many sportbikes, including other hondas, and I do not recall seeing anything quite like this...

That white reservoir or whatever is used to catch any oil that might make it past the baffles for the crankcase ventilation system. Do not mess with that system. It needs to continue to operate or the crankcase will build up pressure and you'll start blowing seals all over the motor.

I'm actually going to go the other way and while I'm checking the plugs and filter, going to remove the PAIR system.

So, if I understand Greg's writeup and your tips, if we flip the reeds, we don't need to spend $30 on the block off plates, right?

exactly. Just flip 'em. You'll really appreciate the after effects of disabling the PAIR.

As far as the hose that goes to the carbs, I removed the hose and "T" fitting and replaced it the leftover 3/8 hose from the pair system and cut it to fit. Much cleaner!

You'll want to cap off those PAIR nipples. I've found that even with the reed stops flipped it can still leak by a little and cause some popping.

Hello another newbie. Got my bike about a month ago, luvin it! Ive been reading alot of yalls threads. My bike died on me a couple of times, but no problems. Has any body taken off the curved rubber off the air box, and would it hurt to leave it off, because I love the grunt.
