and, I might be willing to pay for a dyno-run...if you can come to Madison for it?
Motorcycle Performance are the guys I would have do my carb tuning - if we find tasty results from the FIL mod.
They have tuned a number of bikes that have won regional and national championships - and they have built & tuned a number of salt-flat entries.
The shop was featured in the Slimey Crud Run documentary as well (American Cafe)

I have a standing offer for free dyno runs from a shop in Milwaukee. I need to install the new clutch and then go get some numbers.

Madison isn't far for me at all. Just ~45-50 minute ride (got there from Brookfield in 20 minutes flat once when I was a stupid kid).
I need to meet up with another forum member in Madison and pick up some high comp pistons for my VTR. So, if I can schedule this right, I can get the parts AND meet up with you.

So, you can wait for my dyno run sheet, or I can meet up with ya.

Mp has some SH on file...106-108 are usual highest. One was at 109.

You guys do this so I can shamelessly copy it once you're done. Also, can you do an MPG report? Methinks it may play part of the decision making...

For mine I will be keeping as stock as I can. So only change jets in the carbs. I already have 1 hole in each slide blocked.

The K&N filter I will be using is the stock one for the Superhawk. I got one with the bike. Tried it and it ran badly.

My motor is stock. Only have CBR coils and alloy velocity stacks. I may get the flywheel done before the FIL is finished as I have a track day approaching.

And to start with I intend not to drop the height of the lid. More on that once I get further down the track.

This will be a doing it at lunch time mod at work.

I agree. However, the guy who invitied me to use the dyno in Milwaukee, I don't want to get in trouble by inviting another person and bike. I hope you understand.

I am willing to ride up to Madison though, so if you set something up with that shop, and let me know far enough in advance (my work schedule is constantly changing), I can make it.

At least we have figures for stock Superhawks. Good to know!

As soon as my carb adjustments are finalized (still tweaking the lower RPM's a little bit), I can run a couple tanks of fuel through 'er and recalibrate my Veypor gauge to see the exact MPG.
The bike IS getting better MPG than before. Looked like I had almost an entire gallon left in the tank when my Veypor's fuel gauge read empty. My Veypor gauge is still calibrated to the old carb settings and stock airbox. So, there's that.

Is this what you were talking about?

I have no idea what my bike will dyno at. It is faster, but not sure by how much, so I won't make a guess.

Nice! Now, are you going to conform the filter to the lid profile? Mikstr and I both sunk ours down a bit into the lid, so it wasn't tight up against the bottom of the tank and could get some decent airflow. We both still raised our tanks a bit. Food for thought.

I currently have 2 plans. First is just fit the element in the hole as it will just clip in. Then raise the tank 10mm. Frontal area is huge in comparison to stock. This I may well try first as it is easy. the K&N once it is off its solid board is flexible so will easily conform to that shape.

Other way is to mount it on the inside of the lid. I would probably make clips and rivet it down. Then use RTV to seal it.

My preference is the first way as it will be the easiest to replicate for others to do. The filter area is more than enough to flow good hp even with the top part restricted by the tank.

I will also be using an O ring to seal the airbox not a cut up filter housing as that will gain me a couple of mm.

Not sure about your K&N filter, but mine has a thick metal rod inside the rubber that surrounds the filter that made it a real pisser to bend the filter to shape.

How's the project coming along?

Mine bends fine but only on one plane. But it does in such a way that it will fit.

Not had a chance to do much since the photo but as I have a track day in 3 weeks I need to get it finished and on this weekend so next week I can start tuning. This will be in between kids sports and prizegivings etc.

Really like the remote reservoir idea as that means I think I could re-jet without pulling the carbs. But time is my issue for that mod.

Also need to find my jet drills.

Getting there. I cut the hole a little big but it hold there fine. Will run a little RTV round the edge on the inside and use some to hold in the O Ring.

And the geek in me has to weigh it all as well.....

Should be on the bike later today.

That's awesome! I wanted to do that with mine, but the pleats on my K&N filter ran 90 degrees to yours and couldn't bend that way. You got the most post filter volume by doing it that way. Looks great man.

What are your plans for carb settings first time out with the new lid?

Well its on the bike. Ive got 10mm shim under the tank but I may half that. Will take photos at the first jet change.

Im going to ride it as it is. Going out in a couple of hours. Im sure it will be wrong but will give me a starting point. Only ran it for a few mins but its doesnt like idling. Sounds blubbery so I suspect its rich.

Oh another idea i had, just in case it really doesnt run well I can re-fit the K&N filter holder . Not sure if this would help but just something that jumped to mind.

Weight savings is 400grams. I can eat another Big Mac.

Well been for a ride. Real flat up top. Will get the jet drills out tonight. Just got to make up my mind how big. Will lift the needles as well.

Looks fantastic all together. I can't wait for you to get the carbs dialed in. You won't believe the difference!

For jetting, maybe look back at mine to get ya in the ballpark, since your K&N looks to be almost the same size.

Hit a small snag. My spare jets are Mikuni. Wont fit the Kehin emulsion tube. Have shimed the needles so that will have to be it for the week.

At least that will help tell me if it wants more fuel. Just have to make up my mind on sizes. Will probably copy Crux main size. I have smaller idles which I can drill.

Mine carb farted, was like a rifle shot.

Jetting is so far off it sounds rubbish. Should be better soon.
