Trying to get my Red Hawk finished....Had to get another front cylinder head....0.015 resurfacing doesn't work with JE 11:1 compression ratio pistons and stage 2 cams .....exhaust valves don't like it. New/used front cylinder resolved it.
Trying to get my fuel carburetion correct.... taking note each change I do, looking at spark plugs color....and low and behold, I noticed, when rear piston was at top dead center, a very small silver mark. Oh crap something fell in while I had the plug out....NO....the spark plug was just touching the piston which took the carbon off the piston leaving the silver aluminum mark. No F...ing way. I marked the distance of the spark plug on a skinny rod...and yes...it touches the piston. (It also shows very lightly on the spark plug). Going online and buying a couple of 16mm x 12mm x 2mm copper crush washers, installing them on the plug, to keep it away away from the piston.
Not sure if the front piston has the same problem, but tuning the front cylinder has been good. As for the rear cylinder, I have had real problems doing the low speed setting, much to my neighbor's distress. Also cannot get the bike to go past 9000 rpm. It misfires and sounds like it is not getting enough fuel. The mid range is incredible, I know this because I have a second VTR for comparison.
Will let you know how it goes.
Took the Carbs off again. Set my Main Jets to 180 front, 182 Rear...Slow Jets 48 with .020 on rear needle only. Having difficulty on setting a smooth idle, especially when you accelerate quickly and let the idle come down to rest. It will slowly come down to rest, and pause at around 2000, instead of coming down to idle quickly.
I'm assuming I need to go with the original slow jet.
Other than that, the bike revs all the way to the red line very strongly.
Attached are photos of the washers I made up for the spark plugs and a photo of the mark on the piston (
from the spark plug because it was too close.)
I looked at the plug specs with NGK and do not know which plug would qualify for that design and heat range.....need to look again I guess. Side gap plug would be preferable.

Where are the fuel screws set at? I thought a hanging idle was a lean condition.

My thoughts too. I have adjusted the mixture screw at low idle by vacuum and the screws are out 1-3/4 .
I do have Stage II cam, which could possibly cause this issue...???
Sent an email to Roger Ditchfield to get his advice....hopefully he is still around to answer questions.
