Spokes, the rear cylinder runs more rich than the front from the factory. It helps with cooling that cylinder.

Fair call. But I wasnt keen on using the old caps anyway. I will order some Urethane next week and turn it to the correct size to fit in the hole and fit over the coil. This will resolve the water ingress and wobble.

And it will be red, as it is faster.

Yes, but the plug was very sooty. I do think this may have more to do with the age of the plug and how eroded it is. I will recheck it when I have turned up the coil retainers and fit them.

If you have a look at the head design and how the OEM plugs fit in the hole.. I think you'll see, its not a round rubber retainer that is bets suited for the task. But a retainer that is round at the lower point to seal and steady the cap on plug, oblong rectangular shape at the top to fully seal the spark plug well off from debris and weather.

IOW I don't know how you will "turn" such a cap seal ... on something like a lathe.

Perhaps if you cut it to a rectangular profile, drilled the center and then mounted and turned down the lower section, that might work?

Very interested in what you end up with and you you got it there.

Same for what your process it to machine or turn Urethane

i am interested to do this mod as my caps and plugs must be quite old now
only thing
how do you wire it ?

there are 3 wires going to the oem coil and 3 from the new stickcoil offcourse with the white plug on, so i am geussing just cut and solder but wich color go to what ?

also with this you can modify a quickshift from another bike.... must be a standalone unit with only ignition cut off but still quite a easy job...

My plan is to make a tapered tube to slip over the top. It shouldnt need to rectangular piece if it fits right. Will detail it when I make it.

My partner has just had surgery and is high need at the moment so she take priority. But for the last week its has been very wet here. Everyday to and from work has been heavy rain. Bicycle tubes work as the bike has not missed a beat.

Hope you're partner heals up well and steady! Good tip regarding tubes, I get caught in rain quite a bit and will keep that in mind!

just curious, has anyone ever done a duel plug head conversion on the VTR? It's common for older BMW's but is there any benefit for a VTR engine?

Nice try twist, next you will want to install a second throttle to double HP.

Were those bmws dual overhead cam multivalve motors? (or maybe airheads)

I'm sorry, I have to say something. It's coil on plug, and not cap. COPs for short.

the COPs are always giving me the hairy eyeball.

Maybe adding a throttle to the left side will increase HP?

That other thread linked is the best collection of info on the subject.

I think reusing the OEM boot is the best way to seal out water/debris

One of my pics in that thread shows the detailed carving I did to get a really good seal on the stick coil. I also used some silicone as shows in Pic #2 of mine

One on each grip, one for each carb.

Agree that's the thread & method I'll be using this winter. Someone gave me a pair of coils as payment for a favor.

Little update on this. Am now going to open the gap out to 1mm and see what happens.

Stick Coils, back to back to back. There was actually a 2hp difference. Why? I am 99% positive it was because his stock coils were the originals from 1998 with a crap load of miles/use on them.

A lot of people, myself included, do this mod, because thier stock coils are old and instead of buying new stock coils, why not upgrade? Less weight (however little), less parts, less wires. And if you do it right, you buy a set of four coils with harness off eBay, sell the other two coils on here and the mod will be almost free.
Not only that, I'm pretty sure I stated in the very post I made that it was because the stock coils was crap, and I knew it...
